  • Annoyed!

Hi, firstly this is my first ever post on here, so sorry to steam in with a rant, however, i'm a man in need of help!

Firstly, i look my car off the road last year to avoid all of the vulgar weather, so it sat on my drive for about 3 months. Now, the snow eventually cleared last week so i went and bought a load of Megs products to get it all nice for the new year, then i discovered this:

Tiny little bubbles all the way along the boot lid, it's the only panel on the entire car it's happened too and i'm just lost as to what it is!? It was cold over winter here, dropping to minus 14 some days, but i don't think it should have caused this?

    Any help is appreciated guys

    Thanks

Sorry to see and I can understand your frustration. Has the panel been painted at all? Looks like clear coat is bubling to me. If it is the panel will have to be repainted.

First of all, welcome to MOL.

Sorry to this rather bizarre issue happening with your car. Has this panel been repainted by any chance? Is this panel of a different material than the other panels on the car - like a urethane or aluminum panel when all others are steel? How old is the car? And what do these bubbles feel like - are they firm or does it feel like you could depress them if you pushed on one? Keep in mind we aren't suggesting you do that, we just want to get an idea how much paint is coming up.

This looks like a fairly wide and narrow panel so, worst case scenario, if serious repairs are called for they shouldn't be too terrible expensive. But let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

I thoght it would have to be a spray job....i hate getting things sprayed

It's the actual boot lid itself so it's metal. The dimples are sort of tough to the touch, that said it was still pretty cold out when i washed the car so they're probably frozen!

Looking at the panel today, they're still there but they've sort of changed, and the panel itself looks to be all watermarked?

This may be dumb... if it was that cold, its not ice or something frozen to the surface....

I set myself up for that...no! It's not on the surface, it's like frozen drops of water, under the surface?

No problem for the rant because it's not a rant. You've discovered a perplexing and unusual problem and your trying to come up with a plausible explanation, and I were in your place so would I!

              Paint

Once the paint is applied and dried under normal conditions it will not bubble even in temperatures of -40F or -50F.

We all know that the finish and durability of a paint job relies heavily on each surface properly prepared from the bare metal through the clear-coat. If one of those surfaces become contaminated the next coat my not adhere properly resulting in lifting or bubbling.

I've seen this happen only once and what I discovered was that the primer coat was washed and was not thoroughly dry when I shot the color coat. When the surface was subjected to heat the moisture underneath the paint expanded and lifted the finish in a very ugly way.

Now my experience was with heat and yours cold and while there are very few things that expand when heated and frozen water or moisture is one of them.

This is only one possible theory. One other would be that one layer of finish was not compatible with the proceeding layer but this would have been painfully apparent within a few minutes after laying down a couple of coats.

One thing you can try is putting the car in a heated shop and see if anything changes.

I'm wondering if the metal is not rusting from the underside of that panel and the rust is pushing upward.

Either that or it's sap or something like that on top of the paint.

My car had sap droplets that looked like that. Hopefully that's all it is.

Clay got it off of course.

OP did you park the car under or near a oak tree? This looks like oak tree sap clear bubbles and all over the car?

It's not sap that's for sure, it's not near any trees. When the sun comes out today i'm going to wash it again and take a few more detailed pictures of it. I've pulled the car out of the shade a little too so hopefully a bit of sun should heat the whole thing up. I shall report back tonight

I'm still scratching my head over this and curious to know what you found. Bottom line is; if it's under the paint then it needs to be refinished. Even if heat "seems" to cure it, it'll be back. You really need to find the root cause of the problem and correct it.
