It's surprising that the jacket didn't come with some instructions for care.
You will sometimes find a tag on the clothing telling you how to care for it.
Evidently, the only information they gave you was what not to do.

        I would:
        1. Try to contact the distributor and get their recommendation.
        2. Try wiping the surface with a mild soap and water solution. If it is waterproof, it's possible the dirt is on the surface
        3. If you have no luck with that, hand washing seems to be the only alternative.

        4. I'm not recommending this, but if all else fails, I would probably wash it in our washing machine on the "Delicate" or "Hand Wash" cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Probably Wooliite.
This could damage the jacket, but I wouldn't be able to wear it if it was dirty anyway.

            Re: Cleaning a jacket??

I've had good results washing my Klim riding gear in cool water using Tide detergent. No troubles at all with color bleeding, etc. My gear is composed of Goretex, rip stop nylon, and other items are polyester/spandex blends. I'm not sure what Polaris gear is composed of but am guessing it is at least one of, if not a blend of the above components. The Goretex care instructions as well as the Cordura don't specifically name a brand of washing detergent but the Tide has worked for me. For stains in your garment the Goretex care instructions state you can use a spray pretreater (they name Shout and Spray 'n Wash) and the Cordura says a spray stain remover but doesn't name a brand. I've used the Spray 'n Wash on my gear with no problems but since I'm not familiar with Polaris' exact materials I would try a small test spot first in an inconspicuous area, like inside a cuff or something. I doubt it'll cause any problems but test just to be sure.
When washing do not use any fabric softener and make sure to rinse well. Many garments of this type can be tumble dried (check the label) but use the low heat setting and NO fabric softener sheets. If in doubt then just let it air dry - put it on a stout hanger and position the collar, sleeves, etc in a natural wearing positon so they don't dry "preformed" into odd shapes.
Also, after washing, it will probably be necessary to recoat the garment with one of the water proofing sprays (Revive-x, etc.) to maintain the original water repellancy.
            Hope this helps.
