  • Best tape?

I see a lot of a blue tape used in detailing in this forum. Can someone please let me know the make/brand? I am assuming it is better for the purpose than standard masking tape......
    Thanks in advance!

I like the duck brand painters tape. It is not as pricy as the 3m. I have not had any issues with tape residue from the duck brand.

I like green automotive tape a bit more because it leaves virtually no residue, while my blue tape tends to leave a bit. A spray of Last Touch and any reside is gone anyway, but when working on extremely soft clearcoats, I like to touch the paint as little as I can.

I use the blue 3M painters tape.
Who makes the neon green tape? Is it less expensive than the 3M?

3M makes a green tape also.

Perhaps you have seen that, or I am sure other companies make blue and green tape also.

                Re: Best tape?

Funny thing, most of the 3M tape here (Sydney, Aust) is white and definitely not water resistant and can be tough to get off. House painting use mostly, I guess. I had to call quite a few placed before I located the blue 3M tape (no green anywhere, I looked for both). Thanks very much for the advice!

Is the new Meguiar's tape available yet? Meguiar's has developed tape specifically for automotive detailing, but I'm not sure if it is on sale yet.

                  Anyone have any?

I recall Mike mentioning a vinyl kind of tape?

                        Re: Best tape?

                        The blue and green 3M Painters Tapes are designed for use on fresh paint and offer two primary benefits over what you might think of as "regular old masking tape";

                        1) they use a very gentle adhesive in order to be safely used on fresh paint
                        2) they provide a very clean line when masking off for multi colored paint jobs

These attributes increase the cost of the tape and, as many of you have already mentioned, they are a bit pricey.

The tape that Meguiar's is just introducing has been designed with detailing in mind. The adhesive is a bit more tenacious than that used on a painting specific tape so it will stick better to cured paint and trim, especially when a buffer is bumping into it constantly. The adhesive is also designed to minimize leaving any of it behind when the tape is removed. It can still be turned in a very tight radius so you can easily mask off around tight areas.

By eliminating the attributes that make a painters tape so expensive (attributes that are, quite frankly, generally overkill for detailing) we're able to offer a detailing specific tape that meets performance needs for this application at a better price than those specialized, expensive painters tapes.
