  • "Stuff" in Wheel well, not sure what it is or how to get rid of it [Pics]

I've been messing around with all of the detailing supplies I ordered not too long ago and have been very happy with everything I've used. I think I've learned a lot while lurking here and didn't make any mistakes that couldn't be fixed. Yet...

I've been working on my wife's car in the garage the last few days and am down to really cleaning up her rims. So I pulled off the wheels and cleaned out everything that didn't come off durring the wash and spray down outside. I just seem to be able to get better angles with it laying flat.

The problem I have now is with the wheel wells, there's some "stuff" in there that I can't seem to get out. My guess is that is old wax from a drive-thru car wash, but I'm not sure. It's very hard and really stuck on there. The same stuff appears to be on the hub-caps for my winter tires too.

I've tried, APC+ at full strength, Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner, WD-40, and Bug N' Tar Remover. Each time letting it soak in then scrubbing it with a stiff brush, with no noticeable change.

    Any Ideas? Thanks in advance!

That most certainly looks like highway marking paint to me.

yup, looks like paint to me, a laquer thinner or solvent should take that right off

Yeah, it must have been paint, the laquer thinner took it right off. It got all of the small / medium pieces on the first try. There were a few larger more stubborn ones that came off with my fingernail. I found it easiest to work on the liners after I pulled them out. There were a few scrivets holding them in and a hook at the top. Took maybe 5 minutes to get them out because one was stubborn. Also gave them a good claying with old clay and and dressed them. They don't look brand new, but they do look really good for being 10 years old.

This worked great for the front liners as they were made of plastic. I noticed today that that the rears are cloth (similar to a carpet). They don't look near as bad as the fronts, in terms of the paint. Whats the best way to get road paint off of cloth well liners? I guess worst case I could carefully cut the ends of the fibers that they're attached to, but that could take quite a long time. Also, would it be safe to soak them with APC and then use a brush and wet/dry vac? I don't have any pics yet, but I can take some if it would be helpful.

        Thanks again!

Sometimes odorless mineral spirits can remove paint from synthetic fabrics. I have had luck using that to get dried oil paint out of paint brush bristles. Not sure what that might do to the material on the wells, but a test spot would tell you for sure.

If your looking for a green product, There is a soy product that removes road paint from liners and paint safe as well.
