Yeah, besides cost, if you are tryring to remove contaminants from the paint, you probably dont want to put an extremely slick coating over them right before claying them.

Not that cost isn't important, but I was pulled in by the "Ultimate" name and being a novice I thought a "detailer" was used to clay. I'm just one consumer doing one vehicle (a large investment for me) and I wanted the best product and the Ultimate name made UQD more attractive to me at a small price to pay compared to value of my investment. I was after the best consumer line products to get started: Gold Class, UQD, SwirlX, and UQW.

And it, UQD, does seem to work so very well! At least to my novice hands and eyes.

I have apparently made a novice mistake, correctable the next time around.

If it lubed enough for the clay not to drag, you haven't done anything that will "hurt" your car. Even if it did you could fix it. It's more a matter of getting the most out of the clay and using it as required as part of the process to make the paint as good as it can be before wax/sealer.

Don't think of it as a mistake but just part of the learning process. I have spent hours in retail stores reading labels, at the retail website, and on this forum reading old posts, product listings etc and I still have questions.

Quick Detailer is used for clay lube, but it is not it's primary purpose. Using it for car wipe downs in between washes and waxes is it's primary use.

As UQD has almost the same description as QD but basically says it is better, I certainly see where you got confused and thought, "heck , why wouldn't I use the ultimate?"

I have to say Megs product naming and product descriptions can get confusing. A lot of this is because it takes time to introduce new products and discontinue products in retail environments. Plus Megs is old and they don't want to discourage the older, loyal customers looking for the products they have always relied on to be on the shelves when they need it - so they don't change old product names when new ones come out (hence the whole "ultimate" campaign). Some of it is marketing to a wide range of consumer demographics in a wide range of geography. Finally, some of it is just bad marketing probably arising out of transitions between numerous marketers, marketing companies and ad agencies.

The good news is that Megs realizes it is confusing and provides services such as this forum to help noobs like us. So don't hesitate to ask questions, even before you apply products, to make sure you are on the right path. Weeding through the confusion is worth the quality of the products - and the "search" for the right products for you and your car is half the fun.

Thanks for all the helpful information.

With temperature headed below zero and several inches of snow expected it will be awhile before I can practice the right techniques and use the right products, both right by the manufacturer and right by my eye.

I'm sure I will have plenty of salt, sand and new found swirls to remove.
