  • Tar On Wax

I would like to know, if a surface has been properly waxed, will tar stick on the surface? If its does, how to remove the tar without removing the wax layer? What is the best solution from Meguiar's to remove the strongest tar stain?

    Thanks!

    Re: Tar On Wax

Almost everything you would use to remove the tar is strong enough to remove the wax. Therefore be prepared to rewax the affected areas.

I have had very good success using Meguiars Bug and tar remover.

Just remember to re-wax the area, you will be fine.

I just removed a bunch from the rocker panels of a vehicle. I used some clay. Lots of lubricant and I had to kneed the clay very often (as not to rub the tar back onto the paint).

Tar will stick to waxed paint. No question about it. As mentioned, anything used to remove tar will probably remove the wax. It should not be a problem to simply re-wax that area.

FYI, Meguiar's consumer Cleaner Wax will also remove tar from painted surfaces.

I Didnt know that, gonna have to try it.

So far Body Solvent has handled every task I have thrown at it.

Yep. Had a big old glob of grease or tar on one of our vehicles one time and Cleaner Wax took it right off. Pretty cool! I'm pretty sure I learned that trick from a thread on MOL, I just can't remember the thread.

The cleaner wax may do the job but I much prefer using 3M™ General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner and then reapply the wax. The cleaner is safe and fast acting. Just follow the directions on the can. Been using the stuff for over 20 years.
