  • Scratches On A Black Car

Hey guys...jjust want a quick answer from the pro's or anyone who has a black car...i have been experimenting with ultimate compound...it love the product. it works excellent...however on black paint sometimes you get those small scrathches that are white in color...are these "deep scratches" ? it seems that the white color is the primer underneath the paint..i didnt think of it at first and i tried putting ultimate compound to the test, and no matter how many applications i rubbed in, all it really did was fill in the white and make the scratch blend in rather than removing it...can i have some input? its much appreciated..

here is a picture of what it kinda looks like...this is not my car..just a pic i found on google...except my paint is a very much dark black (look at avatar)..but thats kind of waht the scratches look like expcept much smaller in length and the tip of a tooth pic thin..and it is a nice white colored scratch..i will take a pic of the actual scratch later tonight and post..

Most cars have a white/gray primer, so if the scratch is that deep, it wont be able to be removed.

The way clear coats reflect light also makes swirls/scratches look white. Depending how bad the problem is, it may or may not be removeable.

The scratch on the back fender there certainly looks pretty big and wide, espeacially if it has already been worked on. Probably hard to remove, but more close up pics may help more.

ahh just as i figured..anyway the pic is not my car , just a google pic..my cars scratch is VERY fine and thin..i feel that if i clean and prep the surface...dip a toothpick into my touch up paint..the tip of the fine tooth pick would fit perfectly into the scratch almost making it virtually unoticable..i ordered touch up paint in my cars color from the dealer today..will be getting it tomorow..cant wait to try it out..it just stinks becasue on a black car, the white/gray stands out so hard...but ultimate compound does a great job filling in those deep scratches, i almost couldnt find it again !

If applied properly to a fine swirl/scratch, it should remove it, not just fill it in.

If your finger nail catches at all on the scratch then polishing it won't remove it... it's too deep. It can be made to look better but it won't go away.

Keep in mind that there is most likely a clear coat of paint on top of the black. This is what you are polishing... not the black paint underneath. If you fill a light scratch with black paint then you are probably filling the clear coat with the same color.

Also UC does not fill the scratch, it lowers the level the surrounding clear coat to that the scratch is either more difficult to see or removed completely. There are some products such as NXT 2.0 that contain fillers but UC is not one of these.

i know thats not what UC does...i was just saying that for the scratch i have which is to deep to remove, it does a pretty nice job covering up the whiteness
