  • What's wrong with my paint?

I just completed a full exterior detail of my 1976 Toyota Celica TA23. The paint is a respray from a previous owner so I have no history on her. I used UC and the Meguiar's DA220. The before and after look the same but she is cleaner now with less scratches and more highlights. The problem I am having is on mainly the roof and boot. She has 'sweat pimples' that don't seem to move with the DA. What are they and can they be removed? Thanks. Pic 3 shows the roof problem.

    Those are bumps, not dimples?

Bumps. They look raised but I can't feel anything. Paint is smooth but looks **** in certain lights!

Yes. Just used the mild clay. The surface is super smooth but looks like underneath the clear coat there are raised bumps.

Hopefully someone didnt get overspray on the car between base and clear coats. Maybe more of a painting pro can chime in along the way.

I think based on the pictures the best way would hire a detailer or a mol member with experience to wet sand it for you.. other wise you would have to live with it :]

That is solvent pop. It happens when there isnt sufficient cure/flash times in between coats of paint. Since the solvents are trapped in when they evaporate they create bubbles like the ones you see. These usually will not come out with wet sanding and will need a full sand and repaint.

I was talking to a mate of mine (body shop painter), and he was telling me about one car that had exactly the same sort of symptoms as your Celica - explained it the same way......

He didn't call it 'solvent pop', but that's how he explained it...

Personally I wouldn't worry about it - gives the car some character!!!

Personally the car looks great if its something you can live with than do so but if you show the car i would get it fixed.

Its also called "Orange Peel" and can be smoothed out by ultra-fine sanding. It can also be caused by improper painting techniques/setups such as low air pressure, incorrect nozzle, applying to much paint, etc.

That is not the same as orange peel.
