  • ONR with full detail?

I've been using ONR for my winter washes, but was wondering if anyone uses it as the wash step in a full detail (as opposed to a typical water rinse wash)?

I raced home this evening to try to get a full wash (M62) done so I could dedicate tomorrow to claying and polishing, but was met by a light, but albeit steady rain (heavy drizzle). I was ready to pull out the ONR, but seemed to remember in one of the many threads regarding same that someone said they didn't recommend using it prior to a full detail.

    Any thoughts?

While ONR isn't a Megs product, I personally would not hesitate to use it for cleaning before a full detail. If you are going to be doing machine polishing and or defect removal using any of the compounds such as UC, ScratchX, M105, M205 etc. etc. I can dang near guaranty that it wouldn't have any effect. If you are just washing before using an LSP, I have personally done that using both Megs LSP's AND other makers LSP's and have had no issues. The ONLY issue I have is that Meguiars are dragging their feet bringing out a better ONR than Optimum!

      Re: ONR with full detail?

I have been using ONR for five years as my wash step on my cars and client cars. For four years we could not use hose water at all.
ONR works great and I have no mess on the garage floor.

Sounds like it's worth a shot.

Something about it though... almost like using deodorant in stead of a taking a shower...

Optimum No Rinse. A rinseless wash.

I washed a car today with ONR that had not been washed in about 6 months. It took some work and I even pre-soaked it with spray. The dirt was embedded in the paint so it took several passes.

                    ONR is Optimum No Rinse.
A wash product that doesn't require a hose and rinsing.
Although it isn't a Meguiar's product, there's quite a bit of information on it if you do a search. So much it's hard to decide which articles to read.

While we're on the subject of ONR, how would you guys say it compares to GC shampoo?

I have heard enough good stuff about ONR that I am going to order some, but I am just curious how it compares in terms of shine/paint conditioning.

                        Re: ONR with full detail?

Well, it is somewhat comparing two different products really.

GC with two buckets, grit guards, running water, etc will be much safer for the paint. But dont always have that option.

                          Re: ONR with full detail?

As stated, two different products for two different uses.
IMO, both very good at what they do.
The ONR does seem to leave the paint shiny, but I don't think either product "conditions" the paint.
I think you will like rinseless washing. I very seldom do a conventional hose and bucket wash anymore. The convenience of being able to wash the vehicles in the garage year round with no concern about rain, snow, sun, dust blowing is something I really like.
It has it's limitations and if I have caked on mud or salt residue, I do a pre-rinse to get rid of it. Sometimes with a hose in the driveway, sometimes at the DIY wash bays.
Really dirty wheels, tires and wheel wells are somewhat of a challenge, but not something that can't be handled.

I must be doing something wrong, because one cap full of optimum ONR/gallon doesn't seem to be enough. I also find it to be more of a pain to wash and then dry sections at a time than to just get out the foam gun, spray, wipe, rinse and dry. If the car is not that dirty, I would rather just use Megs LTD in a spray bottle 1:1 to get the job done. I guess I don't have a "mild dirty" to where I feel the ONR is a benefit.
