  • How to remove rotary buffer holograms?

    Our 2 month old red BMW 335i has buffer holograms caused by the dealer polishing the car before delivery. They are relatively minor and only show up under direct sun light or a halogen light. I do not want to take it back to the dealer fearing that they'll just cause more damage.

    Is SwirlX a good option to try and remove the holograms? I would really like to avoid using anything more aggressive unless it is absolutely necessary. Thanks..

    I recently similar had similar situation with some holograms that were the result of some repair work done at a body shop.

    I first used M205 with a DA and polishing pad that I thought (under xenon light) had removed virtually all of the holograms. The next day full sunlight revealed the holograms were still there, but not quite as bad. After reading through some threads on the subject I tried simply wiping down the area with Last Touch to remove any possible residual wax/sealant that I may not have effectively removed after application. Sure enough, the holograms were completely gone.

    You didn't indicate if you were working with a DA, rotary or by hand, but if a detailer wipe doesn't work and since you are talking about a new car, I would definitely test a small area first, least aggressive product/pad to more aggressive. Not saying SwirlX won't work well, but some other less aggressive products are (in increasing order of aggressiveness):

    A12
    ColorX
    M66
    M205/M80

      Hi and thanks for the response. I haven't washed this car since we got it. My wife uses it most of the time and I haven't had the chance to have a go at cleaning the paint.

      I am relatively new to Meguiar's but have achieved very good results on my other car; so you could say I'm converted.

      I am using the very heavy Makita dual-action but that's all I could buy out here. I wish I had a Porter Cable or a Meguiar's RO.

      The reason I am thinking about SwirlX as a first resort because Meguiar's state that it is "non abrasive" so I am hoping that it doesn't cut the paint.

      I can get ColorX here but not the others like M205, etc so I have get by with SwirlX.

      I plan to do the following:

      1. Wash car with Meguiar's shampoo
      2. Clay the car
      3. Clean the paint with Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner using the DA buffer + white pad
      4. Apply SwirlX with DA + Grey pad. Start with small area and inspect to decide if it is working.
      5. Polish with Deep Crystal Polish using the DA + Red pad
      6. Apply NXT 2.0 Wax by hand. This stuff is magic
      7. Hope for the best.

      Any advice, thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

        6. Good. Remember two thin coats are best.

          Thanks for the response. I'm glad that you think the DC Paint Cleaner is not needed because it can be hard work. The pads I have are Lake Country or similar. In decreasing cutting ability they are orange, white, grey, blur and red.

            Havent used the LC pads, but that is probably a decent way to start. Maybe someone else can chime in on the pad colors.

              I use the LC CCS pads.

              The orange is too aggressive of a pad for what you are trying to do. I typically use the orange pad when I'm using M105. It's a cutting pad.

              The blue and red pads are the softest pads and have zero cut to them at all and typically used for products like glazes such as M07 and LSP's.

              This leaves your white and grey pads.
              The gray pad is pretty much the most mild pad with any cutting action at all. Typically used a lot with AIO type products or with polishes such as M205, SwirlX, ScratchX where you only need the most minimal correction ability.
              The white pad is the most commonly use pad for general polishing - it's has enough cut to it to do minor paint correction work and works excellent with products like M205, D151 etc but it's not so aggressive that it leaves micro-marring like an orange or yellow pad may.

              Depending on the severity of the holograms and the hardness of your clearcoat on your car I would do test spots with your SwirlX with both the gray pad and the white pad and see which you need. SwirlX is so mild that most likely you will find you will accomplish better results with the white pad.
              If the SwirlX doesn't take the holograms out than try going to ScratchX 2.0 and again try both gray and white pads to see what combination will work for you.
