Getting my car winter ready - under body washing

    Getting my car winter ready - under body washing

    I've done some searches before posting on here, but there are a couple of things I'd like to ask. 1) before rustproofing I was wondering if I should find a place here in Toronto and power wash the bottom of my car to remove any grime and dirt before rustproofing my car? 2) should i even rustproof my car since it's new i'm worried about them drilling holes in it (my brother told me lol) 3) should i wax it before it snows? i read that helps to prevent damage a bit. If anyone is from the Toronto or surrounding area can you recommend anywhere to wash the under body? I took it to a coin-op car wash and could only remove so much dirt from it around the inside wheel area. There was obviously more I could remove, but I thought at $3 a rinse, I could probably pay the same and do a better job if the car was hoisted maybe? lol I was on the floor trying to get under the car, I bet some guys thought, this girl is hardcore cleaning her car. anyways thanks guys

      Wash and wax with a synthetic sealant like NXT 2.0, M20, or M21 before the salt hits the road. For best results, polish with something like M80 or M205 before waxing.

      Rustproofing is pretty much always a good idea, but I don't know what your brother was talking about with the hole drilling...

      I would think that any reputable place that would rustproof your car would know enough to clean the underbody before doing so...
      If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to record the event, how can you be certain that there was a tree or even a forest to begin with?

        Holes are good. They allow access to inside door panels, etc. They should plug the holes with a rubber or plastic plug.

        Although it's only a distant nightmare here in Florida, I used to drive straight to the rustproofer from the dealership. As mentioned, anyone reputable will pressure wash or steam clean and let things dry thoroughly overnight and shoot the vehicle the next day.

        Unless things have changed, even the best only cover rust through for five years.

          This edit thing has got to go! Note I said rust through and not surface rust such as around moldings.

            Hi Belinda3..my brother lives in Toronto. He says you should be able to go to any of the newer ESSO touchless washes and they have an underspray wash. Unless you have been out mudding, it really probably is not necessary to have the car underwashed. If you are planning to go to Rust Check or Crown or some one that uses an oil based spray, the product will easily penetrate what little dirt you would pick up in normal driving. If you are going to get the car undercoated with the stuff that hardens (Like Zeibart and not recommended) then washing the undercarriage might be a good idea.

            AS for drilling holes, it shouldn't be an issue, but you might want to check your rust peroration part of your vehicles warranty. Toyota used to frown on this, but I think they are over it now. At Rust Check they drill, and after spraying put grease on the holes and put in a plastic plug. It doesn't hurt the car at all.

              How costly is rust proofing, generally, on an average sized sedan?

                It costs about $100 Canadian. I get mine done in Canada when I visit as I have never seen a Rust Check in the US. We must have some or something similar. Whatever you do, don't use the guys that spray automotive oil as it will kill rubber. ie CV boots etc. I don't know what the Rust Check people use, but it does not hurt rubber.

                    Krown uses a petroleum based spray, that's what I just read on their site. I'm sure I read somewhere that petroleum based sprays aren't good for any of the rubber liners like around the inside of the trunk, door panels. Would it do any damage to anything like the boot under the car? .....my brother said it might.
