  • Using "he" detergent for washing MF

With front load washers becoming much more popular I wonder if any of you have noticed any differences washing your towels in your front loader with "he" detergent compared to a top loader with regular detergent.

I have never used a specialty microfiber cleaner, but I am considering buying some to use when I wash my towels in our front loader. I dont know of the differences in "he" and regular detergent other than it is supposed to create less suds since the machine uses less water. I always select the water plus feature on ours which uses more water than it would otherwise.

I know there are a million how to was mf threads.....just wanted a little feedback on this particular subject since I didnt see much pertaining to it using the search.

    Thanks

The difference is the machines that require HE detergents are more engery and water effiecient, so they use a special type of detergent that is forumulated for that.

HE machines are complex little beasts (my wife has a set) that figure out how much water to use based on how much stuff you put in them and since they use less water even on a full load than a traditional machine, they need a detergent that will deliver less suds. If you put regualar detergent in an HE machine, it'll be a like a scene from a sit com where the dad does the laundry for the first time.

In terms of cleanliness, it's fine. We use the same brand detergent in our HE machine as we did in the old one, we just use the HE formula. Your towels will get just as clean. I do usually set mine to high soil level though because some of the towels are nasty depending on what they've come in contact with.

I initially used Woolite He to do my mf but used a specialty mf cleaner when I picked it up in trade. I think the specialty detergents rinse better and I attribute that in part to its thinner consistency - more water than a regular wash detergent.

I just use the HE version, now that it's finally available... We've had our Bosch front loader for 9 years now I think. Back when we got it, there were no HE detergents available so I used the regular powdered stuff unless I really really needed something clean, in which case we had a box of German made HE specific detergent. Both worked well for us.

Our Bosch has a setting for an extra rinse, which we use all the time as my wife is sensitive to residue. We also use the no scent or brightener added detergent, which can be a bear to find in an HE formula some times. I use vinegar for the rinse fwhen washing my mf towels and they come out just fine.

I remember waaaay back.... we're taking late 50's possibly early 60s, my parents had a front load washer back then... I can't remember the brand, but they did make them that long ago... then it seems like they vanished and only came back now in the past 7-8 years or so. Of course, commercial washers of this type have been around for a long time.

Back to your question, if your washer has a setting for an extra rinse, I'd use that... using extra water in the wash only reduces washing performance but treats the garments more gently... not an issue with MF towels considering how gentle a front loader is on the normal setting. This past summer we were on holidays and decided to so a bit of washing at the laundromat. They only had top loaders so we chucked our stuff in and let it go. We were amazed at how much rougher our clothes looked when it came out from the washer... not cleaner, just more tattered and well..... worn.

You could always try a MF specific detergent.... I don't bother, and I'm happy with my results.

        Regards

        Christian

In Meguiar's garage we use a liquid "HE" detergent in our front load washer and have no issues at all, both for microfiber towels and Soft Buff 2.0 pads.

Oh, and thanks for the reminder....... we've got some laundry to do from Saturday's Detailing 101 Class!!!

I have used the he detergent in our front loader before and they seemed fine to me. We currently dont have any because we bought the regular detergent by mistake. I just use a smaller amount.

I have always used the water plus feature on the front loader because I figured the extra water would help rinse the towels out better since the front loaders use so little water to begin with. And I always use the extra rinse also.

Also my towels dont have that strong static cling like feeling like when they were brand new. They seem soft and dont mar that I can tell.
