What would be an exceptable substitute for QD and work equally as good while being able to buy by the gallon?

Something that could be diluted and put into a spray bottle....

I use Last Touch spray detailer. Buy it in the gallon and dilute it in a spray bottle.

I've been using ONR as clay lube. No complaints with it either. I used to use LT but felt it was too good a product to be using as a clay lube.

I have tried the onr for a clay lube. I actually like the Last Touch diluted 1:1 better.

I'm a big Last Touch fan, but isn't ONR the more expensive product?

I use Last Touch, but I actually dilute 1:1 even for a QD. Last Touch is very slick, and it almost seemed too slick to me full strength (well, that and I like how cheap it is diluted 1:1).

                    Re: optional clay lubricant

Both LT at 50/50 and ONR in lube dilution work well for me. Given my druthers, I'd pick LT but as I have a gallon of ONR and a gallon of LT, I'll use the ONR for major jobs and the LT for a quicky or a trouble spot where I need a slightly slicker lube. ONR is the cost leader based on dilution, but Last Touch, purchased by the gallon and diluted 50/50 will hardly put you in the poor house.

Keep in mind that I use a rather sticky clay (Ricardo blue) rather than Meguiars as it is more cost effective for me. The Megs clay is not inferior, just that it is not as sticky/tacky as the Ricardo Blue and so I like an extra slick lube when the going gets rough.....

                    Regards

                    Christian

yup, probably Last Touch and #34 Final Inspection would be the optional clay lubricants that Meguiars has to offer ...

Gold Class and water has served me well in the past when there is no QD around.

Maybe. But i only use a couple ounces of ONR to every gallon of water so i can stretch it quite a bit. I'm a huge fan of LT as well, but now only use it when QDing to get that LT shine. But even with doing this i still go through way more LT than i do ONR. Maybe it's just my particular situation.
