  • What I learned from my first detail yesterday...

The weather here in Dallas has been either raing or threatening to rain for most of the last 3 weeks now. I've been stocking up on products and waiting to get on my cars with them. In the past 3 weeks, I've hosed them both off at the car wash just to get the **** off, but haven't done much else.

Well, yesterday, the chance of rain dropped to under 10% and the chance of the fallout from the trees around my building making a total mess of my wife's CRV were near 100% so I gambled and spent 5 hours on her truck yesterday. It was a learning experience for sure!

I have been reading over the forums here for the past few weeks and some of the tips I found most helpful learned here that I employed were:

    1. Break your clay bars into 2-3 pieces when you open them. I had to work in smaller sections, but I dropped the bar at least 3 times. Most of the drops were early on until I got the hang of using it.

    2. You can never have enough towels on hand. I thought I had enough, but I listened to the voice in my head that told me to get extra towels when I popped into O'Reily's for some NXT 2.0 wax. Turns out I would have been way short on towels had I not listened to the voice. Dropping a towel makes is pretty dirty and didn't want to grind the grit into the paint.

    3. A slow wipe makes clean up/application a lot easier. I found this to be true when cleaning up the QD during the clay process as well as when I dried after both washes.

Thanks to all of you for sharing those tips with me. They were most helpful!

I also learned that cleaner wax is wonderful thing! My original plan was to use the NXT 2.0, but even after claying the truck, there were still visual contaminants on the paint and I was affraid I was going to have to use some abrasive cleaners to get the paint cleaned up. Instead, I decided to go ahead and use the cleaner wax that came in the clay kit. Man that stuff is AWESOME!!! It removed the rest of the stuff the clay couldn't get up.

When I was finally done, I was amazed at how beautiful the truck was. I did not know that a white vehicle could sparkle and shine like that! When my wife saw it, she was impressed and commented that the truck looked brand new. I know the only problems with the paint now are a few door dings and other defects that detailing can't fix. Of course, it seems like when the car is so clean, those little boogers really show up!

Of course, it did end up raining last night, so some of what I did was lost. At least I saw what's possible. I'm not too upset because the wife's truck was practice before I move on to MY car . As soon as the forecast is clear, it's on!

A cleaner/wax followed by Nxt is always a good quick detail.

Let me correct something I posted above. I incorrectly used the term NXT thinking it was the correct abbreviation for the Next Generation 2.0 Tech WAX. I didn't mean to say I intended to use a quick detailer in place of a proper coat of wax.

Not only am I still learning how to use the products, I'm still learning Maguairese. Based on yesterday's results, it will be well worth the effort.

The wife is still remariking how nice her truck looks despite the fact that it rained last night and there was leaf debris on the hood already.

When we came back from the grocery store, I took the time to show her the towel & bottle of QD I stashed in the back and how to use it. She didn't care much for the scent, but was amazed that in less than 5 minutes I had the hood clean and looking just washed again.

Very true about the towels...you will usually use more than you think.

Make sure you get good quality MF towels. I don't have O'Reilly's here, so I don't know if they carry good towels or not but I'm not able to get good towels at the local parts stores. In fact I did testing and found that the el-cheapo towels at auto parts stores put swirls right back into the paint.

              Good job and good luck

When claying, lay newspaper on the ground in the area in case you do drop it. Good way to save $ the hassle of constantly buying clay.

It sounds like you had a very positive experience for your first detailing session, congrats!

And don't worry about a little rain - now that you've got the truck nicely detailed you'll find the next time you wash it you'll get a whole new experience. Washing and drying will feel so much quicker and easier and you'll still see that beautiful finish when you're done. Remember that as a final rinse if you take the nozzle off the hose and just let a steady stream of water run over the paint you'll sheet the vast majority of the water off the truck - drying will be a snap then!

We are a bit surprised that nobody here threw up the ol' "This Thread is Worthless Without Pictures" thing, but keep that in mind when you detail your car next!!!

By time I was done with the detail job, it was too dark to take pics, but I'll keep that in mind.

My PT Cruiser is the same color as yours Michael, so I hope to be able to have it looking as awesome as yours does. I'll be getting on that tomorrow unless it's raining because my wife and I are supposed to go out tomorrow night and I want the car looking good when we do. Afterall, I can't take my wife to see her favorite band in a dirty car

I knew there were some great tips I'd forgot!

Looks like I'll be adding a little newspaper to my detailing supplies....

That is exactly right. Once the major wash, dry, clay, wax, and buff is done the next one goes MUCH quicker. I always use Ultimate Quick Detailer from Megiuars and I swear by the stuff between washes.

                          I completely agree.

I just wish I had known this as a kid washing my father's MGB doing everything wrong and hating life.
