Hello, need some help here or advice...

Used another brand of detailing clay the other day, with last touch as a lubricant... Problem was that the clay seemed to "grip" to the paintwork and left a residue all over the car that required a bit of elbow grease to remove... any ideas of why it would have done so?

yes, you were not properly lubricating (or not enough). There should be ZERO gripping while you clay. Use lots of spray so the bar totally slides over the finish. Dont worry, it will still remove surface contaminants.

If you were using lots of spray, sounds like the lubricant was not suitable for that clay bar (but probably you just did not use enough).

Better yet, but the Mcguiars kit with clar-bars (2) and spray, even includes some cleaner-wax,

      Re: Claying

You should have enough lube on the paint that when moving the clay quickly over the paint it's actually splashing a tiny bit. This is one of the few cases were "if some is good, more is better." Use a proper lube (which you did) but don't skimp. We read this complaint about clay fairly regularly, and about all brands of clay, to be confident to make the above statement.

yes...plenty lube. I have a small car and if it needs a good claying,I'll go through about 3/4 of a bottle of QD. Over here costs about $20 for 1 bottle of QD! That's about 4 times the price for you.....So use plenty.

Have you ever used a different type of lubricant with the clay bar before? Some quick detailers do not work well with clay bars and cause them to fall apart prematurely. That will leave a residue.

How contaminated was the clay bar?

            was it fairly new?

Spraying the clay prior to using it helps as well.

I've used LT 1:1 for claying, although not as slippery as QD IMHO, it worked. I may dilute it a little stronger for the future or straight, it's cheap enough and even cheaper for a gallon of that compared to a gallon of QD.....

I get mine to stick once in a while and yes, it's a pain to get off!

I've had good results with Mother's clay, and Meguiars Last Touch diluted about 60% LT, 40% water. If it's dragging, spray more lubricant. Are you working on a shaded cool surface?

Thanks very much to all for the responses... The clay bar was brand new, but from word go, it seemed to fall apart or didnt hold together like the meguiars i usually buy... Its a cheaper no name brand so i dont know if that effects the quality... probably does...Problem over here in Australia is we cant get the 3 replacement bars, and for the smooth surface pack over here, we just get the Quik detailer and 1 bar of clay... so expensive, its $40 each time i buy some... Its so cheap for all you in the states and alot more stuff is available to you all... And when i complete an order through autogeek, the freighting costs to Australia is a killer...

                    Hate the shipping fees...

Anyway I'm assuming you have more Quik Detailer left?

You're "supposed" to clay twice a year ( or by running your hand over clean surface to see if it needs to be clayed) ,so you probably don't need a lot of clay.

I'm pretty cheap when it comes to clay so I usually cut the clay piece in half. ( it'll be smaller, but as long as you make it thin the area will roughly still be the same)

I didn't notice you were from Australia. Expensive aswell!

Try asking 'Davey G-force'(forum memeber) . He might be able to help you find a cheaper source.

if you ever get the chance to visit Jakarta - Indonesia, I would be happy to show you the places to buy Meguiar's products :], they seem to be cheaper here in Indonesia than other countries in Asia..

or maybe if you had a friend visiting Indonesia, he might take some products back to Australia for you? :]
the Smooth Surface Clay Kit is around $30 USD, and the replacement clay is $20 USD..

                          Thanks for the reccommendation Eddie.

Can I just say that I'm not Megs supplier, nor do I have any secret sources which most people in Australia wouldn't already know about. I will reply to those who have sent me PM's with the online suppliers that I use.

I did try to start a group buy from Autogeek once, with fellow Australian members to offset the cost of shipping, but that fell through. Perhaps we can rekindle that endeavour?

Nice one Eddie, keep it up, I'm proud of you mate!

I didn't use the gum, I used patches and slowly weened myself of those. That and SQ did the trick for me...
