  • Absolutely new car. Clay? Cleaner? Glaze?

Just picked up my new 2010 Corolla XRS from dealer. It was washed, unsure if it was waxed, but no obvious dealer-swirls. At first I thought "no need to clay", but when I ran my hand over the car it was smooth to normal folks, but some roughness to the crazy fanatics on this forum. So, here was my new-car detailing process:

    1) sprayed detailer and wiped to remove any lingering top dirt (since car was washed at the dealer the night before, no need to repeat washing)

    2) slight roughness to touch, so decided to clay car (and to also remove any dealer wax). Used new clay bar and LOTS of spray to ensure easy sliding. Only got some slight dirt discoloration on the clay, but surface was then totally smooth (even to folks on this forum).

    3) decided *NOT* to use paint cleaner (DC1) since paint was new and should not need it. Anyone think that was the wrong decision ?

    4) was unsure if Glaze (#7) would add anything to new paint. But, I love the stuff and figured it would not hurt, so applied it. Anyone think that was the wrong decision? (or unnecessary/useless?)

    5) was going to hand apply sealant then NXT-2.0, but other posts said #21 was almost identical to NXT-2.0 (just optimized for machine application), so I hand applied 2 coats of NXT-2.0 (to ensure total coverage, door openings and trunk opening included). Note that I applied the 2nd coat after 1 hour, then waited overnight (12+ hours).

    6) I know, Mike and others say NXT-2.0 is as good as it gets, but I just love #26 so applied final coat of it.

    Closeup of hood results:

Front: (and NO, the front bumper is not smudged or scratched, is the photo reflection)

Side: (and NO, the front bumper is not smudged or scratched, is the photo reflection, again)

    1. good

    2. good

    3. good, should not have needed DC1

    4. #07 can never do any harm and can only help

    5. correct. #21 is basically just the Pro-line version of NXT 2.0. use one or the other, whichever you have.
BTW, sealants like NXT or #21 usually recommend applying the first coat than waiting 24 hours for that coat to fully bond to the paint before applying a second coat or topping with a wax.
Since NXT 2.0 has a small level of cleaners in it the fact that it's not really layerable most likely makes this a moot point anyway since the second layer will most likely remove the first one any but it's recommended to do both applications to assure full coverage rather than having areas that you may have accidently missed on the first application.
I would wait 24 hours after the second application though to "top" it with anything else.

    6. I top NXT 2.0 (well, in my case #21 but really the same thing) with #26 a lot. This is the combo I always use on my show cars.
Again, I wouldn't apply the #26 until a good 24 hours after the NXT so the NXT has time to fully bond to the paint
What am I, fly-paper for morons?

If that is your car in the avatar, red, then i think the #7 would have been a good idea. If you've already finished up.....next time

Toyota Nation doesn't seem to like you hot linking to your images on their site - you're welcome to place them on our servers here at MOL if you'd like.

Otherwise, as far as your plan goes/went, BarryK was pretty well spot on - and so were you, for that matter. As for multiple coats of NXT or 21 and topping either with M26 - so much of that comes down to personal preference. If you want to do it, then we say go for it. But if you want to lay down 10 layers of something, we'll flat out tell you not to bother because you won't gain anything. Yes, we would sell more product, but that isn't how we want to accomplish that.

              The car looks great!!

Now, make sure you select good tools and use proper technique when washing/drying from here on. That will greatly reduce the number of swirls you'll create from here on out. It's impossible to keep a perfect finish on a daily driver, but using the two bucket wash method, a clean microfiber wash mitt and a couple of Water Magnet waffle weave drying towels will go a long to minimizing the potential.

When I first posted this thread note, my avatar was still my "old" 96 camaro SS.

This picture does really do it (or Mcguiars) justice. Still looks wonderful due to never having used anything but Mcguiars. Wash-Clay-Glaze7-M26.

                  Car looks good.

It was the Corolla that I seen. Red was the point,so it's all the same.

                  I've used DC2 a lot(consumer equivalent)and like the results.
