  • Need Advice On Next Detail

I am getting ready to do a detail on a co-workers newly aquired car. It is a 2001 BMW 530 that needs some TLC. There are two specific areas that I was hoping to get some help with, a bad paint chip in the hood and the wheels.

    The car

The chip in the hood. I don't have any touch up paint and was planning on taping it off and just avoiding it altogehter. Any suggestions?

The Wheel. Really scratched up and looks to be very badly stained. At my disposal, I have Wheel Brightener, APC+, Nxt All metal polish (but I think these are clear coated), M105, M04, and a mini powerball. What combinations do you think would work best?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

For the paint chip: Detailing will not help, I once read from somewhere " If there is no paint for a detailer to play with, then there's nothing he/she can do"

I would just go for touch up paint. ( this is the only option i can think of )

And if you are detailing the car I would just tape off that area (as close to the edges of the paint chips as you can )

For the wheels I would try the APC+ , then the wheel brightener ( READ THE LABELS, the product MAY HARM certain wheels) , then if these don't work, move on to the polish.

Well, the wheel pic looks like the paint is gone in areas.. not much you can do about that. And Wheel Brightener could be very bad for it now.

I'd be looking at APC+, or even looking around for the All Wheel/Aluminum Wheel Cleaner.

As for the hood... ugh. You could ask what he wants. The simple thing would be at least getting some sanpaper taped onto a pencil eraser, and just work it around to get rid of those peeling edges. Then he can dab in his own paint, or he can give you some and you can apply a few coats slowly with a toothpick tip. You would certainly avoid the area with machines either way.

Thanks. I knew the chip was a non-starter, but I was worried that it would be bad news on the wheels. So, unless someone else has a better idea later... I will try the APC+ on the wheels and then polish.

Thankfully the owner and I did a walk around the car, so I think I tempered the expectations enough so that he knows what is and isn't possible.
