  • Polishing new chrome: What to use?

On the newer vehicles with the "fake" chrome, what are you guys using on it?

Like the new ford truck grilles, etc?

Seems like I can't find anything to do the job right.

You can try either Hot Rims Chrome Polish, or if you'd prefer, just put whatever wax you're using on the rest of the car on it. My car has that fake chrome on it, and I usually just leave it. Not a whole lot you can do for fake chrome.

I wouldnt use a Chrome Polish, meant for metal, on the fake chrome. I'd stick with a cleaner/wax and wax.

I agree on NOT using polish meant for metal chrome. It will scratch the heck out of the vacuum-deposition chromed plastic. I have used SwirlX on a microfiber with VERY delicate pressure to remove scratches from the chromed plastic. I would recommend trying to find something even less aggressive than SwirlX. Maybe DC1? I agree, skip the chrome polish on the fake stuff. I uaually just apply whatever wax I am using.

Thanks! I was wondering about this same issue! I will try dc1 on a test spot/waxing - this stuff seems to scratch just by looking at it!

Re: Polishing new chrome: What to use?

My point was, using Chrome Polish probably won't hurt anything, but it probably won't do any good either. It's just a waste of product to use it on fake chrome. I tried it on mine, and it didn't do a damn thing. So, best just to leave the chrome polish alone on this one.

I hate to say it, but I use Mother's Chrome polish on my Ford Truck grill and I think it looks great. However, I'm going to try some #16 or NXT 2.0 on it next time to see what happens.

'Chromed'(fake or whatever) plastics do well with a coating of wax while you're doing the car.

                    hmmmm.

I cannot count the number of times I have used Hot Rims Chrome Polish on fake chrome, and it actually looked pretty darn good.

Not to mention how great it works on real chrome too:

                        If something works....it works...use it.

I havn't tried a dedicated chrome polish,so i can't say. I did try NXT all metal polish once on my 'H' emblem and it didn't really make a difference. But to be fair,it was 15 yrs old and pitted and didn't improve with anything.

I've changed the emblem,so I can experiment with the old one.

We have a new F250 with the chrome package, and nothing seems to make it shine properly... I may try some swirlX or something of that nature...
