  • Got keyed, need some help

Thanks in advance for any input.

I have a 1998 Accord in "heather mist" (a cross between gold and silver). Last night it got keyed from headlights to taillights. At some point they lost control and it went up into the trim near the window and they started again.

Anyways, the car has its share of door dings and paint chips and am not looking for perfection, just trying to hide it a bit. I am passing on the insurance route as I have a $500 deductible.

The scratch doesn't appear too deep, I can feel it with my finger but my finger nail doesn't really catch it.

I have a PC 7424 that I have used in the past with Megs cleaner wax. I have some white (mild cut) pads and and a black glazing/finesse pad (no cut) that I got from another online retailer.

My plan was to use M80 with a W8006 pad to start and see how that goes. From reading the forums, it sounds like the M105 is great but should not be used with a PC (is that right?). If the M80 doesn't improve it much, I might try the M105 by hand and finish with M205.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Pics would help, but yeah, I would be thinking #105/UC along the scratch by hand, then maybe #80 by machine.

      Wow. A#$holes.

Do what Murr suggests, but if you absolutely can't remove the scratch then hiding the scratch with a paint retouching pen would be a cheap option.

I'd use M105 by hand on it, Ultimate Compound might work if you can't get any M105. Working by hand lets you focus on the scratch itself. Using a PC will spread the force over the 6.5 inch working area.

And yes, you can use M105 with a PC. M80 is a great product, but not really known for its cutting ability. You'd need a test spot to see if it will have enough bite to correct the defects.

            That stinks.
Do what Murr suggests, It should make a noticeable improvement in the keyed area.

Re: Got keyed, need some help

Thanks everyone, appreciate the input. I spent a lot of time cruising the forums before I asked, but want some reassurance.

Think I will do what Murr suggested and try some 105 by hand and follow up with some 80 on the PC. I'll try to get some pics up of the before and after. It was too dark last night when I posted to get initial pics up. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend.

SDPrius, thnx for the shout out.

Re: Got keyed, need some help [updated]

Finally got around to working on the scratches. Tried m80 and no luck so I went for the m105. I tried it by hand initially with some luck, but it really shined when I used the PC with an 8207 pad. I had to go over the areas usually twice but as many as four times on some sections. The scratch depth varied and there are still a few sections where the scratch is quite visible. However, for the most part you can only see the scratch from the right angle and light and have to be looking for it.

I haven't put on the m205 yet and I am going to follow that with NXT 2.0. It took longer than expected to do my whole car in m105 because I had trouble with it drying out as the day got hotter. Here in Phoenix it got above 90 degrees and as the day went on, the m105 seemed harder to work with. It began to dry quickly and get powdery, and it was very difficult to remove with a mf. I ended up having to remove it with quick detailer and an mf and then another clean mf to take off the quick detailer (I thought I read this as a suggestion if it dries out).

There is a real art to getting good representative pictures of scratches and, obviously, I am not there. But I think you all can see it looks 100 times better.

Thanks again to everyone for the help and suggestions.

Re: Got keyed, need some help

Read this thread to make your pics bigger, instead of just using the thumbnails: How to place an image in your messages. That way, your pics show up like this:

                  Front Door/Quarter before

                  Front door/quarter 50/50

                  Front door/quarter after

                  Rear door before

                  Rear door after

                  Rear quarter before

                  Rear quarter after

It just makes it easier for people to view your pics and comment, rather than having to click on the thumbnails and go back and forth between your gallery in order to see bigger pics. Sometimes, the more work people will see they have to do, the less apt they will be to comment. Just some friendly advice. Nice job on clearing up those nasty scratches, btw. Looks loads better!
