  • W-1000 Foam Pad w/ Backing Plate

My local body shop carries these pads and says this is all they use to buff, polish, and wax. They swear by them.

I want to apply ColorX and then top it with NXT. Is the W-1000 pad a suitable choice for both of these applications?

    Thanks!

I believe the W1000 pad is for the rotary buffer only, and I don't think Meguiar's recommends applying either of those two waxes with a rotary buffer.

Yes, the W-1000 is for a rotary. I didn't realize that a rotary couldn't be used with those products. Stinks because I don't have a DA and I hate using orbitals.

So, what is the best final top coat that I can use and apply it with a rotary or should I apply the final top coat by hand? Which do you recommend and which products?

      Thanks again!

Possibly M66 followed by M21 2.0. M66 is a good paint cleaner and leaves a little wax behind. M21 2.0 is essentially NXT 2.0, but designed for use with a rotary buffer.

        I've never used the W-1000.

Thank you! That info on the M21 2.0 is something I didn't know.

I also have never heard of just using one pad for buffing, polishing, and waxing like my local body shop does. I don't think it is a good practice, especially since the W-1000 is primarily a polishing pad I believe. They swear by it and I have to admit, the results they get are very good, even buffing with it after 2000 grit wet sanding. I would have never thought that foam pad would be aggressive enough to get rid of the sand marks. They do work for John Force and are a very well respected shop amongst Hot Rodder's, so I guess I shouldn't doubt them.

Anyone use the W-1000 pad that can chime in?

Like ColonelCash stated, M66 would be the closest equivalent to ColorX and M21 would be the closest equivalent to NXT, and both of those products are in the Professional Mirror Glaze line which are formulated to be used by rotary buffer, by hand or by DA polisher.

I have never used the W1000 pad, but like you said the W1000 looks more like a polishing pad and that would be OK for applying a cleaner wax like M66, but I think I would use a foam hand applicator and apply the M21 by hand vs using the rotary buffer. That is just my preference as I have never used a rotary buffer for applying waxes. That does not mean you can't try it though to see how it comes out.
