  • Help with car interiors

    Hullo folks!

I was recently asked to help detail a car. It's a 2003 VW Beetle Cabrio.

The interior buttons, dashboard, etc, seem to be coated with something (rubber, perhaps), which over time, has melted, and is now sticky.

I was told that cleaning it with alcohol works, but I'm not sure if it's true.

Anyone else has this problem, or who has managed to clean out the stickiness?

    Thanks a bunch!

The way you describe the interior, it seems that it hasn't been detailed in it's life!
Do you or are you able to obtain some pics of the interior?
My plan of attack from what you describe would be to hit it with M39 (after a test spot), work it in with a good quality brush, and wipe off with a clean towel. I always follow this up with M40, this combo to me does wonders to my interiors.
M39 takes out everything I throw at it so this is what I'm recommending for you.
    Hope this helps ya!

Thanks for your reply Underdawg736. As I understand, there is cleaning with a damp cloth, but that's about it.

Pictures don't tell the porblem. It's sticky to the touch.

I was told that I could try using alcohol to clean and it might help. Anyone ideas?

Seems that the coating on the buttons (audio controls, window controls, etc) is done for other makes in the VW group, so anyone else has seen this problem?

Is there any out of the way location that also has turned/become sticky? Could test spot there. APC/+ also being options.

          Thanks for your replies.

Ok, I talked to the dealer, and it's a type of soft paint used at the factory to coat the buttons.

So, is there a paint cleaner I can use without removing the paint?

Well, a mild APC, or Qiuck Interior Detailer would be safe to wipe over paint in good condition. If this paint is failing, that changes things.

Thanks for your reply, Murr. Considering the soft paint has melted, unfortunately, I can't honestly classify the condition as good...

I wouldn't rub those parts, it's not paint, it's some type of rubber wrapping they put on these types of vehicle that even a nail can lift this rubber coating.

APC would help out but just be gentle to the touch. Good luck

I know its not meguiars, but I cannot beat this stuff with anything they make that I have tried so far, at a consumer level. It cleans everything, smells good..I had "monkey snot" on that melted on the back seat of my G8, with the red/black interior. It looked terrible, i thought I was going to have to get it professionally removed. I sprayed extra foamy on it, waited about 5 minutes and it came right off. works on panels, carpets, engine bays, you name it.
