  • I know this is just wrong but...

I've got a Craftsman 10" random orbit buffer. I would love to get a hold of a PC but I just don't have the $$ for it. Maybe for XMAS...

Anyway, in the meantime, I would like to know which pads to use on the RO Buffer. I used a terry cloth pad on the first go around just to see how it worked. This ended up leaving minor swirls here and there. That made me realize that I'm more than likely using the wrong pad.

    My typical routine is:
    1) Scratch-X (since I actually use my truck as a truck )
    2) Deep Crystal #2 Polish
    3) Gold Class Wax

I've got a Black Blazer and a Metallic Patriot Blue Dakota. This process works good for my schedule since it doesn't take too long. It also gives decent (not excellent) results. Makes my vehicles look better than most, in my opinion.

The Blazer has swirl marks throughout which Scratch-X has made a slight improvement on. I'm looking to use #9 (Swirl Remover 2.0) on it, but don't know which pad would work.

Please help me figure out which pad does what and how it will fit into my routine.

    THANKS,
    Rookie

    Hi kuhlguy71,

Random Orbital Buffers like this one,

I think give you three options of bonnet material, wool or sheepskin, cotton and microfiber. Until you get your own G-100, you might try using a microfiber bonnet. Meguiar's offers their microfiber bonnets in three different sizes of which one should work with your size buffer.

    Ultimate Bonnet

I think there is company that makes an interface pad/adapter that allows you to place a Velcro-backed foam pad like Meguiar's foam pads onto some ROB's.

      Thanks, Mike!!

Will any of the bonnets you mentioned work well with #9?

I would think so, as good or better than applying by hand. It depends on what you want to accomplish. #9 Swirl Remover 2.0 is a very mild cleaner/polish. If you were to shake a bottle up, then pour some product out and feel it between your fingers, you would find this product is rich and smooth like skin lotion.

Random Orbital Buffers are pretty good at applying polishes for beauty and waxes for protection, but they are not real effective at removing defects such as scratches on modern clear coats because the paint is typically harder than traditional lacquers and enamels, which by comparison are softer and typically easier to remove defects out of by hand or tools like the random orbital buffer.

There are some good discussions on these tools which you may be able to find using the Search button and typing in the key words, Orbital Buffer.

            Hi newelly,

            Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

When you say the 6000 yellow pad, do you mean the W-5500? Or the W-8000 pad?
