  • New to Detailing

So I have no experience with Ultimate Compound or any compound for that matter, however this site has increased my confidence in it. The first thing that I wanted to check up on was wether or not the paint/clear coat on my vehicle would cause any problems when applying Ultimate Compound. (I got a little paranoid when I saw a thread about UC ruining the paint on a honda civic and someone mentioned paint or clearcoat may have been a factor).

I have a 96 Ford Explorer that I just bought, I got a great price on it because of the condition of the body. It has 2 fairly large sun damaged spots on the hood, swirls and scratches on the sides, another sun damage spot on the driver side door, and bird dropping etches. Anyway I was also hoping someone could confer with me to ease my mind about UC being the right product for the job.

My final question is when I use the UC if I decide to is, after rubbing in the compound do you wipe the residue away immediatley or do you let it dry like a wax before removing?

    Thanks for your help guys.

    Re: New to Detailing

UC is pretty much dummy proof, meaning you really have to be a screw up in order to do damage. If it were a harsh compound, Meguiar's would have it with their professional products and you probably wouldn't find it at Wal-Mart. That being said, I have used Ultimate Compound a number of times without any problems whatsoever. A wonderful product, IMO. To answer your other question, you need to remove UC immediately after you have worked it in. DO NOT LET IT DRY!! If you want to start out with a bit more mellow product before you jump straight into Ultimate Compound, then might I recommend ColorX to you. It is a great cleaner wax, and used properly might even take care of some of those problem spots for you. Here is a good thread for you to read: 1996 Ford Explorer. Hope this helps!

Does anyone have any tips or tricks that someone new to detailing could benefit from. I'm also curious how ya'll think the vehicle will turn out with all the damage that I have explained above? Thanks again for all your time.
