  • critique my steps on Black w/ scratches

1st off my Black GS300 has swirls and has some pretty nasty scratches that I've sanded w/ 3000 grit sand paper.

I first got really into Meguiars when I decided to try the NXT wax on the black paint. Mind you.... i've been a long time Zaino user and the only reason I tried the NXT was because I've been hearing rave reviews about it and it was cheap enough to try out since I needed to completely strip my car down and clay bar.

well here are the steps and I'd like to know if I'm doing anything wrong.

    -wash
    -claybar
    -dry
-I use 3m polishing compound at the very deep scratches approx 2 coats by hand.
-#83 w/ my PC but at how many rpms?
    -#80 w/ PC?
    -#7 showcar glaze
    -NXT wax

is there anything I should top off the NXT with? I'd obviously use 2 coats of NXT w/ 12hrs in between. I tried searching around but get mixed answers on the varying rpms for #83 and #80. Mind you I have not purchased the #83 and #80 yet but I already have #7 and #2 but apparently thru searching #2 is probably not for my application.

please let me know if I should be doing something else.... any info would be great! and Thanks a whole bunch to Meguiars for making me throw that box of Zaino into the back of the garage!!! yea.... Thanks!

PS the reason why I like the NXT better then the Zaino is because although Zaino offers an amazing mirrored shine... it doesn't offer much depth. I've had 8 coats of Zaino on my car before I switched up in the course of 5 months. 1st off its a painful and time consuming processs.... the finish is awesomely glossy but since I have a black paint I've always felt that it lacked depth and a look of refinement. It definitely looked clean though! The NXT looked almost as mirrored but mind you this was only 2 coats! plus it's so much easier to apply and the price tag is definitely A++++ The NXT made the black paint look very deep and luxurious, definitely the look I was going for. I still use Zaino on my powdercoated wheels though. I think they are perfect the way they are!

    Hi CombatChicken,

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

You state that you have sanded your car's finish with #3000 grit sandpaper.

Have you completely remove these sanding marks yet?

well after I sanded the area it left a really dull hazed area on my hood of course. I used the 3m Polishing compound for about 2 coats by hand and it mostly went away. I figure after the 3m I could use a bit more finer cutting compound such as 83 and 80 and it should completely go away. But to answer the question it did not totally go away but only visible within 2-3 feet of the car.

should I go return my #7 and #2 right now at Kragens?

        Hi CombatChicken,

In most cases, the clear coat finish on most cars today is hard enough that you really can't remove sanding marks by hand. I'm not sure that the 3M product you used was formulated to remove sanding marks by hand either. Our two most aggressive compounds in the Professional Line are formulated to be used with a rotary buffer. You would have little effect trying to use them by hand.

I have sanded down paint and tried to remove my sanding marks by hand and have been successful, but it takes a lot of work.

What you need to do is have a Pro remove those sanding marks with a rotary buffer.

What you want to do is first remove the defects in your finish, (the sanding marks), then we can move on to the polishing and protecting steps.

I have an incredibly full and busy class this Saturday with the North Coast Corvette Club. This class starts at 8:30am and goes till about 3:00pm, possibly longer. If you want to come by around the 3:00pm time frame, I will remove these sanding marks for you as soon as I can. Note: The club members and anything I'm doing with them as a part of this class have priority.

        Will this work for you?

        Mike

        p.s.

It's possible you could remove your sanding marks with the dual action polisher using a W-8006 foam polishing pad and the #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish depending on how hard the paint is.

        Like I always say,

You don't know what you can do until you try"

btw I was going to stop by w/ the IS300.NET Meguiars meet a few weeks ago. I saw Dave organizing the meet but caught wind of it a bit too late as I had other arrangements to attend.

What do you suggest then Mike? ScratchX?... I just used the 3m because it was already in my Garage and it seemed to do a decent job. On a side note though, approximately a week later when all the rain hit the imperfections there really started to reveal itself. Not as noticeable as before but still noticeable. I'd love to stop by as I want to purchase a few products that I could not find at Kragens. But I'd still like to know how to resolve this myself as I'm sure the knowledge will be benificial in the future.

How about 3pm tomorrow and you let me know what I need to buy and we'll get this all figured out.

PS I'm just testing various things out while this paint is still on. I plan on repainting my car in January time frame when I return from vacation.

EDIT: btw, the Lexus paint is probably known to be pretty soft. My paint is Black Onyx much like the Black IS300 you used for the IS300.net Meguiars meet

            CombatChicken,

I won't be in the office tomorrow, sorry. Any Saturday that I have a class scheduled you are welcome to bring it by towards the end of the class. An upcoming Acura-CL class isn't full yet, you can sign-up for that one if you like.

If you want, try applying the ScratchX to a small area, about 6" square, using multiple applications and a little bit of aggressive hand polishing action and then inspect.

How to remove a defect by hand with ScratchX

If you have a chance, try the #83/DACP/G-100 combo running the polisher on the 5.0 setting.
