  • brake dust on aluminum wheels

I've talked to Ford service about brake dust on my 07 F-150 been told it's normal. It has 37K miles and I decided to change the brake pads to minimize it. When I removed the wheels I found this on the inside.

So I cleaned it with a bunch of different cleaners and ended up with this.

It seems the dust has corroded spots into the aluminum. I even used a scotchbright pad in a couple spots with no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to help this?

You could try some Ultimate Compound or #105 with a terry cloth... But I think you will still be stuck with a lot of it.

I personally like the idea of taping the front of the wheel off and then spray painting the inside of the wheels black. This gives it a uniform look and helps to hide dust in the future. It's a LOT less work than trying to keep the brake dust off of them and it actually helps to showcase the front of the wheel.

Tip: While you have the wheels off clean and paint the brake calipers and rotors (be sure to look up what parts are safe to paint, and use PROPER paint and kits for the job for safety reasons). I like black for this job as well for the same reasons- it makes everything behind the wheel disappear and showcases the easy-to-clean wheel fronts.

Hey Luma :P ...I mean Mark; pretty good idea with the black paint. Never thought about something like that.
