  • Wheel Cleaning Routine

    Hey guys,

I usually wash each week, and I feel I'm spending too much time on the wheels.

Here's what I do (before washing):
Rinse wheel well, tire & rim
Spray APC+ liberally in wheel well and on tire
Scrub wheel well and tire with a long handle brush
    Rinse
    Spray APC+ liberally on rim
Spray APC+ on Daytona wheel brush and scrub
    Rinse
After wash, dry and apply UQW to rim and dress tires with Endurance gel.

I know APC+ strips the wax on the rims and is probably overkill to be using weekly. Car wash solution would be better to use on a weekly basis. Only problem is I don't have an extra bucket to mix up some soap, and I'd rather not have to mix up two batches. I was considering getting a smaller bucket and using some solution out of my 5 gal bucket.

So my revised routine might be to clean the wheel wells and tires every other week, and clean the rims weekly with car wash solution. Only problem I might have is the Daytona wheel brush isn't very absorbent. So I might pick up a spare MF wash mitt for the face of the wheel, and use the brush for the inside of the rim. How's that sound?

What’s your routine for cleaning wheels?

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Re: Wheel Cleaning Routine

I always do the wheels when washing the car. I don't spend a great deal of time on them. I use the GC wheel brush, wheel cleaner,a small round brush for getting into the nut areas and an old sponge.I dry off with an old chamois.

I use a seperate bucket that never gets used on the bodywork, with the same type of soap that I use for the car. I do the wheels first, then the car.

I'd recommend, you buy another bucket for the wheels.....It doesn't have to be too big.

I just picked up a microfiber glove from Advanced Auto Parts, so that's my new tool of the trade. And I usually just grab a small bucket, use a half gallon to gallon of water with the *blob blob blob* method of adding soap, and clean. I haven't waxed mine in a long time, but when I do I just hit them with NXT 2.0.

Instead of the apc route you described. How about Meguiars quik wheel detailer? I use this product all the time. I usually wax the rims when I do a complete detail. In between I use the quik wheel detailer and they turn out great.

          Re: Wheel Cleaning Routine

I know that every car is different. I usually do not need to use APC or a wheel cleaner on my Honda rims--car shampoo is sufficient. But I know that other cars need a stronger cleaner.

I believe that the rims should be cleaned every time one washes one's car, but the tires and wheel wells are a different story. I think it makes sense to clean the tires, and wheel wells, well--with APC or a dedicated tire cleaner--whenever one plans to apply tire dressing. If I do not intend to apply tire dressing, then I simply hose the tires down and quickly brush them with car shampoo.

Rightly or wrongly, I never apply a quick detailer to the rims. I dry them of and either let them be or apply a coat of NXT.

Well, you could buy another bucket. What dilution are you using on your APC+? If it is cleaning easily, and you feel it is overkill, can always go a step milder.

But my routine is more or less like yours, though I use the APC for tires/wheelwell, and then the Multi-Piece wheel cleaner for the rim.

And I probably get my car washed every other week.

              Re: Wheel Cleaning Routine

I agree with all the comments saying "get another bucket" .

Anyway I use a sponge for wheels because a MF wash mitt will get destroyed fairly soon if you use em on wheels (in my opinion).

Another thing, try to find a wheel wax (or wheel glaze) , it'll make your wheel cleaning job a LOT easier.

                Re: Wheel Cleaning Routine

I use wheel cleaners on a as needed basis and hit them with QWD afterwards and wax here and there (not as much as I should probably).

I start with good ol' car wash and go up from there. I don't usually have a brake dust problem, just good ol' dust. Gotta love rural areas!

I wax when I wax my cars though.....
