What buffer to get?

I used my friends Buffer on my truck, and I must say I like them.

Now I'm not gonna get serious and dish out a lot of money on an expensive Buffer, but I'd like an affordable one that gives me everythign I need.

I use Meguier's 3 step, and before I head out to the store, what should I look for in a Buffer? How many extra pads do I need etc.?

I'd like one that can buff out some scratches on the clearcoat, and can apply the three step really well.

First... did you use a rotary or a orbital buffer/polisher?

Rotary Buffer/Polisher
This is a rotary type buffer, will fix lots of paint problems but you can also create many more paint problems if you are not skilled in using one not for beginners on a car they care about...



6" Orbital or PC Buffer/Polisher
This is one type of orbital or aual action also known as a PC, 6". I think this is the most popular with member on this board. Very good for anyone to use. They are a little more expensive than the polisher below and cheaper than a rotary, they will fix many minor paint problems nothing to serious, have plenty of power, variable speed and easy to control and great for starting out...



10" Waxer/Polisher
Here is another 10" orbital/dual action, these work OK but nothing like a PC, not as much power harder to control but they are inexpensive more than likely won't fix any paint problems....

Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

The buffer you will want to buy is the Porter Cable 7336 or the 7424 DA polisher. You will also need to obtain Meguiar's:

* W-64DA backing plate
* 2 of the W-8006 Polishing Pads
* 2 of the W-9006 Finishing Pads

This combo will get you started! Once you have used one, you will wonder why you went so long without one!

I agree with Tim, and gb387......... the PC Orbital is a fine tool to start with.

However, keep in mind that it has it's limitations. It won't remove defects that a rotary buffer will remove. Therefore, you may, or may not be able to completely remove those scratches you have to deal with.
