Putting together a detailing business, and haven't found much on this subject.

Any thoughts on whether or not a discount for first time customers is a good or bad idea?

Its a great idea, in my opinion. It benefits both parties, you give a little up front-they get a discount and if you do a good job you will have more work coming from the same customers. You also could get potentially others if they tell their friends you did a great job and give discounts to first timers. I say go for it.

Discounts are a good way to generate business and build up your client list. I would also offer discounts to AAA, military, and retired people. If you do offer a first time client discount, offer a printable coupon via your website if you have one. Set it up so the user submits their e-mail address to receive their coupon. That way you can send out periodic specials or other discounts if business gets slow and you need to jump-start your client base.

One last bit of advice: Put an expiration date on the new client discount coupon. People will procrastinate ad-infinitum if the coupon never expires.

my dads had a bottle of ColorX for probably 3+ years now. I took it home and used it on my moms Infiniti detail and it worked great
