  • Lots of Fine Scratches and Swirl Marks!!

Hello I have a 1999 Volkswagen Passat 1.8T Color: Black Magic w/ Clear Coat

The problem is there are a lots of fine scratches all over the car and swirl marks. What happen was about 5 or 7 years my dad took the car through an automatic car wash, the ones with the blue bristle brushes, and it ended up scratching up the entire car. So we went back to the car wash and complained then filled with State Farm.

State Farm talked to the owner of the car wash and said they said they could buff out the scratches and if that didn't work State Farm was going to give us the money.

So we went ahead and had it buffed but that just ended up putting a lot more scratches and swirl marks in the paint. They probably used a power buffer and rushed the job.

So now my question is, what can I do to remove the scratches and swirls? Some of the scratches are deep but most of them are very faint and only visible in sunlight.

Here are some pictures of the paint:

The best thing you can do is buy a G110, Ultimate Compound, and SwirlX. If you are dead set on working by hand then plan on doing a panel per session and take your time....you are going to need it....time that is.... A LOT of it!

Gotta have power for a job like that. I had 1% of what you have, and here's my experience...

Is Ultimate Compound and SwirlX clear coat safe? Also I'm thinking about buying a Porter Cable Random Orbital Buffer will that work in place of the G110?
And one more question, how fast does the Ultimate Compund cut? I don't want to end up removing a lot of the clear coat.

It is possible by hand, but will take a long time.Even more so if you have hard paint. The G110 would certainly help you out here.

By the way, well done on taking very good pics to show what's needing corrected.Way better than my efforts!

I hope the condition is not like that all over the entire car. It will take a couple days to restore.
G110 and ultimate compound, followed by swirlx.

Auto car wash really should be banned. It is like washing with a sponge loaded with sand.

            Good luck.

As mentioned previously, all these scratches are removeable by hand (or significantly reduced to acceptable levels) with the use of Ultimate Compound and/or ScratchX 2.0. Just remember to finish the process with SwirlX and then a wax of your choice.

Most paint care products on the market are clear coat safe, even when the bottle doesn't mention it.

If you are not inclined to work on your car, I am sure you can hire a reputable detailer from Illinois on MOL.

Thanks for all the info guys! I think I'm going to go ahead and get a PC and use the Ultimate Compound then the SwrilX. Should I Clay the car before using the Ultimate Compound?

Before starting any correction work.....the cleaner the surface the better. It will aid you for viewing and contaminents will not interfere while you're working...A lot might not clay..but I prefer it...I find cleaners work easier.

What cleaners should I use in combination with Claying? Keep in mind this car has never been Clayed, but I do regularly wash the car and wax it.
