  • mysterious paint spots

    Hello all,
I have some strange yellow/brownish spotting going on with an 04 Toyota. (Photo below) Apologies for it being so hard to see, I don't have a macro lens to get a true up close shot.

The spotting seems to be concentrated around the front wheel well area and on the back swing gate. The spots are smooth when you run your fingers over them and claying does nothing to them. It's not road paint as the distribution on the back hatch area rules that out, and that there is no dimpling on the surface.

It is stored in a garage and I have always used Meguiar's products on it. Nothing too advanced, just things like Gold Glass, cleaner wax and polish and the occasional claying. I have not tried more aggressive cutting pads or compounds since I know nothing about those yet and I'm chicken to try it without more knowledge.

What the heck should I use to attempt to erase these things? I tend to be preferential to starting conservativly and slowing increase the aggresiveness. I don't mind buying a several products if it means I dont burn a hole in the paint.

A Bug and Tar Remover could be a good start, letting it sit on them for a couple minutes. Even Goo Gone, etc.

Then you can go with a paint cleaner like SwirlX to hopefully finish them off.

Scratch X 2 did the trick...with lots and lots of effort. Maybe I should have used the next step up in aggressiveness. In any case, it was working so I just carried on...

      Thanks for suggestion.

Stop by Radio Shack with about 8 bucks and pick up a 63-1133 60 to 100 X microscope. Than you can see if it is above or below the surface to better determine how to correct.

Looks a little like rail dust.

That is what I was thinking. Blooming rail dust.
