2nd Coat?

I read that NXT is the most durable wax made by Meguiar's. Also, the purpose of the 2nd coat is ensure even coverage over the whole car.

Let's say if I apply a pure wax (like Synthetic Sealant or Yellow Wax) as a 2nd coat, would this extend or diminish how long the wax would last?

IMO, it probably wouldn't do much of anything.

I've been using NXT since it first came out. I apply only a single coat every 6-8 weeks. I apply the wax carefully and know darn well that I have an even application. I used to top it with a pure carnuba like #16 or S100 Paste Wax for a little more "pop" but found that it did not make a difference.

I suggest one careful application of NXT and come back once every couple of weeks with the new Ultimate Quick Wax.

But then there are those who are OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Detailers).....

Synthetic Sealant aka M21 is basically the same as NXT just with a few more lubricants so it can be applied by rotary. That being said, there isn't going to be a visual difference if you add a second coat, it will just be the peace of mind knowing that you have even coverage.

M26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax is a carnauba blend that can be applied on top of M21 or NXT. It should not decrease the durability of your previously applied synthetic wax and add a little more protection (and if you only applied 1 coat of synthetic and follow it with carnauba, the carnauba should fill any wholes that you missed with synthetic)

If you are OCD and regularly wax your car monthly or use UQW a lot, then it probably isn't that big of a deal to add a second layer unless you absolutely can't live with it.

I am not concerned about the looks. My car is silver and it looks great with the 1st coat. I was actually asking for the durability of the wax if I apply a 2nd coat.

With the first coat, NXT will be the layer that handles the rain, dust and whatever in the local environment. Now with the 2nd coat, let say M21, M21 will be the most outer layer.

As Andrew said, Nxt 2.0 and #21 2.0 are basically the same product. So it would be the same as applying two coats of Nxt 2.0.

Applying a coat of something else, like Gold Class, on top of Nxt 2.0 certainly would affect the hyrophobic polymers, as far as water run off.

Since M21 and NXT are similar, the "water runs off" period will be almost the same.

How about Yellow Wax on top of NXT? Since NXT is the longest lasting wax, this "water runs off" period will probably be diminished.

Well, a good coat of wax will run off some. The crazy water run off is the hydrophobic polymers.

Regarding Mis3's original query, assuming I really did an excellent job on the first application of NXT 2.0 (100% coverage), with respect to how long the wax job lasts, will two coats of NXT 2.0 last longer than one, and if so, is it significant?

I do not recall anyone reporting any scientific data on this question. All the evidence is anecdotal and thus unreliable. My understanding is that M26 is less durable than NXT, but whether it would either extend or diminish the durability of the base NXT coat is anybody's guess. My suggestion is not to worry about it. Plan on laying down a fresh coat of pure wax every 4-6 weeks regardless. That way you won't have to worry about durability. Of course, during the winter months, you may wish to stick with NXT and/or M21.

And might I suggest a generous slathering of M16 or other durable wax on top of that sealant?

I'd actually like to know whether the solvents in Megs traditional waxes such as 26 and 16 can actually dissolve a cured layer of NXT or M21. That would be quite helpful to know for those of us trying to boost the protection over the winter months.....

At -40, I've found that paste waxes haze over rather quickly........ in the can, never mind trying to get it on the paint!
