  • Scratch Shield Paint

I read that the new Infinity car has a feature called Scratch Shield Paint.

According to Infinity website, "Scratch Shield is a soft clear coat technology that can heal most light scratches and swirl marks in the clear coat that do not penetrate into the base coat. It helps paint to better maintain gloss over time."

Wow. Does anyone know how this work?

I don't know about this...Can you post the link?

I just know some finishes are softer than others.

      Re: Scratch Shield Paint

The swirls as well as light scratches are supposed to heal themselves.

      From Wikipedia;
"The EX is also the first production automobile to feature "Scratch Shield," a special "self-healing" clearcoat paint. The paint self-repairs fine scratches, such as fingernail scratches under door handles, restoring the EX's surface close to the original state. The process, which takes anywhere from one day to one week (depending on the surrounding temperature and the depth of the scratch), is accomplished through the use of a special highly elastic resin. This resin is combined with a conventional clearcoat to increase the paint's flexibility and strength by raising the resin density."

Yes, it's been out for quite a long time actually.

It's pretty amazing, and I can see carmakers using this product very soon, at least as soon as Infiniti sells the patent to paint companies for billions of dollars.

Hopefully technology like this will render painstaking polishing unnecessary !!

Now that you have described it and provided the link,I have heard of it before on an TV auto program.I don't know much about it though. If it works as successfully as they claim? Be interesting if any owners can provide some feedback here. Also how it is to work with,if some kind of correction needs done(by that,I mean that it doesn't do exactly as it says).

Thanks for the link.Didn't know it was in use.

                Hey Eddie,

There are a lot of videos and reviews on the internet regarding this type of paint. I am linking one here for the record:

Also, all of the Infiniti built prior to 2008 are virtually swirl-free.

Exactly, I hope this stuff doesn't work, last long, or something.

                      Re: Scratch Shield Paint

I wonder how it heals without incorporating into the paint whatever debris is lying on the surface. That would take care of any "on surface" contaminants by making them "in paint."

^Thats the same thing I am thinking. If the clearcoat morphs and reheals itself, then whatever contaminants were in that scratch are now melted in or under the paint. Not sure how it works though.

                          Re: Scratch Shield Paint

The result would be that the shield will fade over time as it absorbs the contaminates. So yes, it'll "Mellow out" and flatten scratches but I imagine it'll absorb contaminates too

                            So...It's not the perfect paint?

A lot of pro detailers will be happy.
