Re: Bringing a red '67 volvo back to life?

Reading some older threads I found searching for "oxidized red" it looks like a lot of recommendations for M80, and with some pretty good results as well. Should I even be considering M80 if I am going to be working by hand?

M07 may be a better alternative by hand, though I would use it to follow up an abrasive product like Ultimate Compound or ScratchX.

#80 and SwirlX are both cleaner/polishes.

It is a little tricky since SwirlX is meant for hand use, but #80 is meant for machine use, but has a lot of polishing oils in it.

As long as you follow up the SwirlX (which should let you remove more defects) with a pure polish (Deep Crystal Polish or #7), all should be pretty much the same.

Re: Bringing a red '67 volvo back to life?

Got the car home safe yesterday. Spent some time today getting things cleaned up. I'd appreciate any advice or input on the test spot I did before proceeding.

          Pre-wash

          Post-wash (Gold Class)

Test Spot: Smooth Surface Clay followed by ScratchX 2.0 on terry (twice)

I only worked on the corner of the trunk lid. Didn't tape the area off but the seam in the body should give a pretty good before/after comparison.

          After Cleaner Wax

I had planned on following up the ScratchX with the Deep Crystal pure polish and NXT wax. I had to order those products and they have not arrived yet, so I figured I'd get a rough idea using the cleaner wax included in the clay kit.

So . . . thoughts, suggestions, or input? I'm pretty pleased with the outcome. It looks WORLDS better than it used to, but I'm sure it will be far from the best it could be as I'm just working by hand.

Love the Volvo...looks like it has the potential to look new again based on what you have done. If you can get some machine help from Jokeman....go for it. Otherwise your arms are gonna drop right off.....or you'll end up looking like Popeye!!!!

Single stage paint? Good candidate for #7 showcar glaze.

After you've brought the paint to an acceptable level with the advice from these folks, I'd say go over with some #7 before the final wax.

Re: Bringing a red '67 volvo back to life?

The Volvo looks to be in fantastic condition - great find on a really cool little car!

Single stage paint is really fun to work on because you get a very dramatic rejuvenation of the color as you progress. The extreme makeover of the Mercedes Benz SL is proof positive that products like M80 Speed Glaze and M83 DACP are excellent choices for single stage paints.

Obviously that Benz was far worse off than your "new" Volvo, so we would strongly recommend M80 Speed Glaze as your primary paint cleaner. It works great by hand and will do two things for you in one step: the diminishing abrasives will safely remove the light oxidation you currently have, while the rich polishing oils will nourish the paint and bring up a high gloss to the finish. We would definitely recommend M80 over some of the other paint cleaners, such as ScratchX 2.0, for this finish.

Since you will be infusing a lot of polishing oils into the paint with M80, an application of M07 Show Car Glaze is going to be an optional step for you here, but if you're looking for the best you can achieve by hand, it should be very worthwhile. The M80 is going to be a bit of an elbow grease application, but the M07 is quite easy to do and will be nice a break from the workout! As a final step our M26 Hi-Tech Yellow Wax does an outstanding job on these single stage finishes, and the combination of M07/M26 is a well tested, much loved combination on these paints. We get phone calls from people who have been using this combination for many, many years and they still say it's the best they've ever come across.

Keep in mind that all three of these products, M80, M07 and M26, are from our Mirror Glaze Professional line so they may or may not be as easy to find as some products. M07/M26 can often be sourced through NAPA Auto Parts or Advance Auto Parts, but you may want to use our dealer locator to find other possible sources in your area. Just be sure to select "Meguiar's Professional Products" from the list after entering your zip code. The list of dealers returned by this query should all be able to get M80 for you if they don't already have it in stock. A single 32oz bottle should be sufficient for this project, with plenty left over.

As you can already see, you'll be going through a lot of applicator pads, but that's fine. You can wash those pads with soap and water and let them dry overnight. No, you won't remove all the color from them but that's fine - they'll still serve you well.

This project looks like great fun, and we'd love to see more pictures as you progress through it.

I'm in Western MA, sadly. Otherwise I'd gladly take you up on that offer!

You didnt have too much red on the clay?
Hardly picking up much color at all with the clay, and I'm working it pretty well as there is lots of little white specks that only come off with some vigorous clay action.

The terry pads seem to load up faster when I'm working horizontal surfaces than they do on vertical panels. Is this because the flat sections take more abuse from sun and rain and are consequently more oxidized, or because I can apply more pressure to them? Both, maybe?

As I'm spending so much time staring at the paint, it's pretty obvious even to my untrained eye that it wasn't resprayed all that well. There is overspray on a lot of the rubber molding, some cracking in one spot, stuff like that. It is what it is though, and should be a good 5 footer once it gets some sparkle back.

Because I'm a 9-5 working stiff, I can only really focus on this in the evenings. The nice part of that is I avoid the heat of the day and the car is nice and cool by 6 pm or so. The bad part is I can only really work one section of the car per night . . . which isn't SO bad since it gives me a chance to wash pads and towels each night without having to stop. So far I'm just doing clay and ScratchX (one application). Hopefully by this weekend I'll have the entire thing done in that manner, and can polish and wax everything at the same time.

Deep Crystal Polish showed up today. Can't beat 24 hours to my door from the Meguiars online store!

Allllright, here is the finished product! This paint job isn't great, but I think by hand this is about as good as I'm going to get it. Quite a turn-around from when I bought the car last week.

Keep in mind I did this over an entire week, hence the numerous wash steps. I took some of the shiney bits of the front of the car to make the job easier and to clean them up some off the car. All told I think I have 15-18 hours into it. Yes, my right arm is sore!

                                Process

                                5. Clean: ScratchX 2.0 (spot treatment only)
                                6. Polish: Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish
                                7. Protect: Meguirs NXT liquid
