  • Quick Detailer Damage

    Hi,

I'm helping out a friend so I would like some insight on an issue.

Quick detailer were sprayed on the polished lip and has bloched the wheel with spots. Now a few polishing products were tried like nevr dull and a few others.

Any suggestions to get this taken care of.

    Thanks

    Bryan

HMMMM.....I've never heard of QD staining anything. Have you tried washing the area, and maybe claying it? What kind of wheels are they? What are they made of? etc....

By the way seeing as this is your first post on MOL, welcome aboard!

      Morning,

Are you referring to Quik Detailer or Quik Wheel Detailer?

        Re: Quick Detailer Damage

Is it safe to assume that the product was accidentally sprayed onto the wheels and it self dried rather than being wiped off? If so it may cause a minor issue on a polished, bare aluminum wheel.

The products you tried, NevrDull, etc, did they cause your applicator to turn completely black or not? If the wheel lip is bare, polished metal (aluminum or otherwise) it will turn the applicator quite literally as black as soot in no time. If not and the applicator only showed a small amount of dirt then the wheel lip is clear coated. If that's the case, don't use a metal polish on it. You're better off with a paint cleaner of some sort, from something as mild as Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner all the way up to M105. Regardless, you need to match the product to the surface material.

Lastly, any chance of getting a picture of the effected area?

          Hey all!

Thanks for all your help...I will get a picture of the wheel!

I would like to find the resolution for his wheel.

It was quick detailer being used not the wheel one!

Sounds almost like a chemical reaction with something already on the wheel. QD is very mild stuff which I don't think could do anything like that without a chemical reaction or having the product dry on the wheel.

Are you sure that not just an exceptionally clean spot?
I guess try scrubbing with some APC/APC+ and see if that helps.

That would indicate that you're working on bare aluminum and not a coated finish. While Quik Detailer is a very gentle product, the instructions indicate that it should not be allowed to self dry. Some materials, specifically a few clear plastics (specifically the clear cover over the gauge cluster) and especially bare, high polished aluminum are quite delicate and can be stained if this or other products self dry. From the picture you posted, it sure looks like this is what happened. The good news is that you can once again polish this surface back to a high shine using NevrDull or Meguiar's Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish. It may take some time and elbow grease, but it can be done.

In the future you'll be better served by spraying the mist & wipe product onto a folded towel and then wiping the surface, immediately turning to a dry portion of towel to ensure fully removing the product.

For the record, if you should ever encounter a similar situation on that plastic gauge cluster cover, you may not be able to correct it as the staining can be so deep that even PlastX won't fix it.
