  • 2 bucket wash???

Hi, I'm new to car detailing and noticed that most you wash your car with two buckets. I was wondering what the two buckets are for and what you wash your cars with (one bucket sponge one wash mitt, etc)?

You are correct, one bucket would be your soap bucket and the other would be your rinse. I also like to use a grit guard in each bucket.

What this does is minimize the chance of instilling swirls into your paint while washing. You would get a clean mitt and get it soapy and wash a small section. Than rinse it in the rinse bucket squeeze out all the water and soak up soapy water and continue. This keeps as much dirt out of your mitt as possible

Even if you do not have a grit guard or two at the very moment and you need to wash your car, do use the two bucket method.

I find that some people claim that they could not use the two-bucket method because they are waiting for their grit guards to arrive... hmmm...

When I was new to the site. I heard about the 2 bucket method. I tried it without the grit guards. I was amazed at the amount of grit at the bottom of the rinse bucket. That sold me on this process. Needless to say the next day I placed a order for the grit guards.

When I wash a vehicle, I use one item, whether it be a sponge, mitt ..., I never let go of it in either bucket, so if it doesn't come in contact with the bottom, are grit guards really needed?
                Thanks

The grit guards help keep the dirt and such in the bottom of the bucket. The way I see it is this: when you dip your wash mitt into the bucket and swirl it in the water a bit you kick up everything in the bottom. The grit guard helps break up the turbulence of the water moving in the bucket so the dirt doesn't kick up and get back on your wash mitt. This is entirely NOT scientific and just what makes sense to me.

I use the 2BM with a grit guard in only my rinse bucket. I've not noticed any dirt in the soap bucket, so I've never put a grit guard in that one. Each time I put my mitt in the rinse bucket I swipe it accross the grit guard once on each side. I like to think this cleans any debris or dirt from my mitt. I also like to use two mitts, one for the upper part of the car and a seperate one for the lower part where it's usually dirtier.

                        Just my .02 worth.

yes, grit guards are still helpful. if you rub your mitt against the grit guard it knocks off all the extra dirt and then it also helps keep it down by blocking the water from swirling around and lifting the dirt up.

The things I do to fight water spots are try to wash in the shade when it's cool and I try to work as fast as I can. I rinse after most panels so the soap doesn't dry and if I'm done with one side of the car I'll go ahead and dry it, especially if I'm in the sun.
