  • How to protect unfinished wood

Just bought myself a thousand dollar guitar today, and I was wondering, how do you protect/dress unfinished wood? There's no lacquer or any type of coating or finish on the wood.

It is just the bare, sanded wood?

You don't apply anything on it. You keep it in a cool and low humid environment.

Also, MOL is probably not an ideal place to discuss this topic.

The guitar maker says it's satin finish, but it's really like no finish at all...

Too lazy to register to a guitar forum and get harassed by a bunch of 12 year olds.

I mean, satin finish could mean something was applied?

Most of the time, satin finish means just the wood was sanded with some extremely fine sand paper. From time to time, you find manufacturers that apply a thin coat of oil/oil-like substance in addition to prevent the wood from drying in extreme weather.

Consider writing the manufacturer and finding out if the wood is uncoated. Also ask them what they recommend for cleaning and maintenance of the wood.

                x2.

I know that many unfinished woods are protected using various oils, but wouldn't risk it without speaking with the manufacturer for their recommendation.
If a tree falls in the forest and there's nobody there to record the event, how can you be certain that there was a tree or even a forest to begin with?

Because it's a $1000 guitar and he probably doesn't want to risk ruining it.

I would NEVER use anything on a wooden instrument that wasn't explicitly recommended by the manufacturer.
That even goes for meguiars products.

I would consider jfelbab's advice and contact the guitar maker first. But in the mean time, here is a link
to some products made by Meguiars for Fender guitars.

Not sure if this is what you need, but it might be a good place to start. I have also seen these kits at Amazon too.
