  • Can I wax over vinyl stickers?

    Hi everyone,

I have a truck with a few vinyl aftermarket sponsor stickers. Do I need to tape off the stickers before I wax? Can I simply wax over them? I want to keep the stickers looking good and still keep the paint looking its best.

    Thanks!

If they are just plastic stickers you should be fine.I've done this in the past and havn't had any problems.

Waxing over them won't hurt them. Just be careful not to catch the edges with your applicator. Also be sure to clean the dried wax good from around the edges. It's best to apply and remove in the same direction of the edge and not against it if you can.

I wax over the factory applied decals on my Tacoma. You can kind of see them in my avatar.

You can wax over vinyl stickers, decals and graphics if they are smooth and glossy in appearance. For those that are matte finished it's best not to wax over them, but we have seen some really good success with Gold Class Trim Detailer lightly applied to matte finished graphics.

A couple of things to look out for:
            • Pointed edges on decals can be prone to lifting if rubbed over too often and once they lift, it's pretty much game over for that decal.
            • Dark colored graphics against dark paint (think red on black, etc) may show dried wax along the edges that you'd have to clean up with some Quik Detailer and a soft brush. Not a serious problem, just a little extra detail work.
