  • Hot Sun Detailing...

I searched for hot, sun and heat - but too many results that were not right.

What I'm wondering is how people get detailing done in this weather. I live in the DFW area and this weekend I detailed a Mustang of mine. I had to get up at 0530 so I had time to work since at my house, around 1130 the sun is on the car. (my garage is occupied with something else at the moment)

I know there are mobile detailers, other detailers who do detail in this heat. I was curious what tips/methods do folks use to get a detailing job done. This 1 car took me 2 days since I could only work for 5 hours each day. (1 hour deducted from 6 for coffee) The second day I was rushed and could not make all the corrections I wanted to since I was running out of time.

Just curious and insight would be appreciated. I have a canopy, (10x10) just seems it would be a PITA.

I'm up at 5 washing mine in the summer too. I have a black Vette, and I need to get it washed before the sun comes over the mountains (6:30). I'm lucky enough that my garage is not a storage dumping ground. My cars park in there, so I have a place to go and have fun. Sounds like you have no choice but to put up your canopy and give that a try.....

A canopy sounds like your only option.

2 10x10 will be awesome. Each one takes about 5 minutes to put up. But be sure you have a Xenon light since they will block out the sunlight on most of the car.

You have to use a canopy. I don't think that Megs recomends that any of their products be used in direct sun.....

a lot of waxes and protectants need to cure/haze over and if you apply in the sun some of the protective agents will flash off.

Not just that, but working in the Sun is bad for your health, and seriously drains a lot of energy.

I tell customers, if they want a detail job they need a garage for me to work in. If not, they need to drop it off at my place so I can use my garage. Otherwise I won't accept the job. (For longer details at least)

Detailers clean places nobody see. Detailer see's things nobody else see. But if you ask a Detailer to see how a dress looks on a woman, they are blind.

I'm lucky, ALL my detailing takes place in the garage - even washing!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

                    Re: Hot Sun Detailing...

Get a canopy, 10x10's are to small for me, maybe just get another one.
Keep this in mind, the sun is never directly over you.
You need a bigger canopy, or one more, so you can get a big "shade spot".
I use two 10x15 and that works ok, I would like bigger but these are hard enough to put away after a long day.
Also get some weights so they don't fly away, it's happened to all of us.
Also in regards to working in the heat just remember your products will dry up fast, so keep an eye out for that too.
But as long as your working in the shade your products should perform just fine.
And Drink plenty of Gatoraide/water, use a sunblock/hat.

I know if you are in the shade the sun doesn't get to it but the temperature is still 100 degrees. Even in the shade the paint is hot to the touch. I have put wax on in the shade and it hardens almost right when I put it on. Is that okay?

I'm in south FL and the past few weeks we have had a heat index of well over 110, in the shade the cars I've done have been cool (maybe more like warm) to the touch. Do not use it if it is HOT to the touch. How long was it in the shade? Washing in the shade too helps cool it off faster, but where I live I can't wash in the shade, only wax (which why I'm mobile lol)

Well the outside temperature is what I am feeling. The car was in the shade during the whole process but the paint is still hot due to the actual temp being 100.

It's been 93-97 (110+ heat index) here for weeks, man I hate FL! When you say your car is hot, is it too hot to keep your hand on it? If it's that hot, don't apply the wax wait for later or earlier to get that done
