  • Spent 3 hours detailing my car, Have a few questions.

I washed the wheel wells today while detailing and noticed, there is almost no black left on the sides. What is the stuff they spray in the wheel wells, the black stuff. Can I buy it somewhere and respray it myself?

Also, I have some meguiar's leather conditioner wipes, I wash my car at least once a week, and everytime I wash, I use the wipes. It is too much? Can there be too much wiping (MY SEATS!).

Also, on to more advanced detailing...

I have a DA. I'm currently looking at buying a rotary. I already have old bumpers and parts to practice on. But I'm not sure what I should get. I'll not be detailing many cars, probably a few a month, just as a side job. I looked at a dewalt, with 7" pads, adjustable speed, and it wasn't but $170. Any suggestions?

I bought my car January 23rd of this year. It has been waxed every 2-3 weeks, and given weekly baths. The car is in incredible condition for a 2003. It is a 2003 Ford Mustang, with only 54k miles when bought, currently has about 57,100. I paid $7492 out the door, which was a steal for the condition, and it was fully loaded. Leather, Mach audio, and best of all its 5 speed. It is a V6. I just bought a cobra bumper, yes, flame me, a cobra bumper on a v6 mustang. I had the windows tinted, and yesterday, I almost bought a set of 17x9 OEM SVT cobra rims in mint condition, with brand new Nitto tires, for $900. I decided agianst it, and thought I would just spend the money on making my paint look good, and some more supplies for car care

If you have read this far, thanks for hearing me out, and tell me what you think.

The older v6 tires killed me on my 2000 mustang.... so I bought my friend's dad's old tires from his 2001 cobra for $200! I had to replace one and two tires for a total of around $470, but I'm very happy with them and you have to replace tires anyway right?

    Your questions--

Black paint -- Unknown, also interested in this topic for future reference
Leather Wipes -- I'm sure once a week is fine, and will keep the leather feeling great!
Rotary -- Can't help you there, but the two big names I hear about are the Dewalt and Makita. I'm sure this question will be answered shortly be someone else. That is a pretty reasonable price range if I'm understanding correctly.

Not black paint, black interior, and its a DSG coupe. Or dark shadow grey

      Heres a picture.

I think it's called crud ... and you have (quite properly) cleaned it off.

To make the wheel wells "disappear," which I think is what you are asking, you need to apply a dressing. HyperDressing is perhaps the most popular wheel well dressing here on MOL. Other candidates: M40, ASD, or one of the consumer-brand tire dressings (e.g., Hot Shine Tire Spray).
Swirls hide in the black molecular depths, only waiting for the right time to emerge and destroy your sanity.

No the wheel wells on a new car are black..

All the black lining of my wheel wells are gone, its now silver, I am looking for something, like re blacking my wheel wells.

Will black spray paint do the trick, or is it something special coating the wells.

And VonLego, I misread your post, you understand what I was saying.

wheel wells have black out paint applied at the factory. if it's wearing thin careful application of black spray paint will work. I'd recommend semi-gloss black although you may also want to consider the black spray on bed liner used as a coating on pick-up beds as it will be more durable and resistant to chipping, etc although it won't have as smooth or "clean" as a look to it. Than again, a rough textured surface that is clean will look better than a finish that is smoother but has chips, etc in it from rocks and such.

Just be sure to mask off all surrounding areas of the car before spraying to avoid overspray on the body panels
What am I, fly-paper for morons?

Do they look like the wheel wells in this picture (though hopefully not as bad)?

This is a 1990 Honda Accord, and the black lining in the wells just wore off. Somebody had suggested to me to use spray on truck bedliner, which I believe you can usually find at Wal-Mart or any auto parts store. This is my parents' car, and I've been trying to convince my dad to spray the wells, but so far that hasn't happened. Oh well. Just my two cents, anyway.

My dad uses the truck bedliner stuff from Wal_Mart on his 08 Silverado. It works well, he's only had to reapply it once.

My apologies. I misunderstood. Perhaps one of the pros can help you on this.

These black stuff are usually undercoatings applied as dealer-options. These undercoatings are often done by local detailing shops that offer special pricing to dealers.

My experiences in building race cars have taught me that these undercoating are useless after several years. Moisture will eventually creep into the coating and trap moisture, causing the underbody to rust even quicker. You get the feeling that the undercoating is protecting the chassis because the rust is covered by these coatings.

The best protection is to spray the chassis with rust paint, and keep the area clean by spraying water at the area.

Thanks for the replys. That bed liner should work great.

Yes, they are like this, but not quite as bad.
