Yes they are coated aluminum. What meguiars or other product would you recommend to polish these puppies if you think the mothers mag and aluminum polish is too strong? Yeah, I thought it was tire overspray too, but it wont come off. The detailer has no idea, they can't figure it out which is why they are going to look at security tapes.
If they are coated (clear-coat), I would treat them like paint. Use any of Meguiar's cleaners topped with a wax and be done. Polishes for raw metal are too aggressive for coated wheels.

As for what they (or anyone who has cleaned the wheels for that matter) had to do for that to happen, could be what Murr has suggested. That on a hot wheel, it could only be a matter of a minute. Could be too much polishing on top of that. Many things could have caused it IMO.

At least insist that they pay for getting the rims re-painted by a person who specializes in such things. Here in Roanoke a re-paint costs about $100 per wheel.

The car's 6 months old. A bird turd and I'm reaching for the quick detailer in horror. This nearly gave me a heart attack.

UPDATE: they are paying for brand new wheels They don't however know what was put on the wheels to cause that type of damage.

I'll bet they *do* know. They are buying you new wheels.

Yeah, seems rather quick of them to buy new wheels when they are unsure about everything...

They're sure it wont come off, and that they F'd it up. It's all they need to know. I'm just glad it didn't turn into a whole "thing".

Congratulations on the brand new wheels. That says a lot about the company.
