  • Opinions on this claying job

This pic is from another web site. The guy claims this WILL happen if you clay your car. Just asking for opinions on what is going on here or is this "Normal"?

Says NOT to clay unless you plan to buff out the entire car with a buffer......

Well it looks like he used a very aggresive clay. They tend to leave marring. Meguiars mild or smooth surface clay will not do this 99% of the time. There is always that off chance.

Never had a problem like that before...he may have used dirty clay, very aggressive clay, or very aggressive dirty clay. It also looks like he didn't use enough lubrication.

I've never had this happen with the Megs clay kit.

Never happened to me. But I have seen this happen before on a friends car..two things my friend did wrong, did not use enough lubricant and dropped on his 'clean' garage floor and thought it would be ok to use again.

It looks like marring to me...the lack of a sufficient amount of clay lube could be the problem also...

i looks to me like a dirty clay notice the parallel scratching and of course the marring. Plus you should always use a mild clay on black as black paint shows everything.

Re: Opinions on this claying job

I've never had that kind of problem.

Either was an aggressive clay, exhausted clay,a piece that fell on the ground and wasn't thrown away,or,very little lubricant or wrong type of lubricant used.

If you use the quik clay kit and the supplied quik detailer, you'll not have that problem.

Re: Opinions on this claying job

I've used a yellow mothers clay (don't know the aggresive rating) but I would guess his clay was dirty with large particles and dragged it across the paint and/or not enough lube on the paint.

Re: Opinions on this claying job

Well, just all the smears would indicate not enough lube.

You have to try to do something like that, since the clay isnt even sliding at that point.

Re: Opinions on this claying job

I've using the smooth surface kit for over 3 years now and have never had a problem with any of my vehicles.

If I ever drop anything it gets tossed. In my opinion it's cheaper in the long run to just buy a new bar and not risk an expensive mistake.

I have been using the Smooth Surface Clay Kit for 2-3 years now and all with excellent results.

Question: If this happens, is there any way to fix it?

I've never had a problem with mine either. Seems a lack of lubrication or too aggressive of clay is the culprit. Was it a Meguiar's clay he way using or an off brand? Seems I've seen more clay show up (different brands) than I knew existed. I'm sure there are some cheap 'want-to-be's' that would do that.
