  • Swirl X, Scrach X, or Ultimate Compound?

Hey guys.. I just bought a black (ha ha ) 2007 Yukon Denali all chromed out and factory 20's. It looks decent, but like everybody else, it has swirl marks, and shows signs of a typical teenage hack buff job by the dealership.

    My questions are....

I know start with clay, I have used that before on my last Denali (white, very easy!)

What would be next?? I have read several topics on this, and they all have different ideas. When do you know to use Swirl X, Scrach X, or Ultimate Compound? Common sense is telling me it should not require Scratch X. Some say Swirl X is too light, but I have seen some terrible pictures of what people have done with Ultimate Compound.

    What should I do???

    Thanks!

First of all, welcome to MOL Paul.

As for the problem, Meguiar's recommends using the least aggressive method that will still get the job done. It reduces the risk of undue risk or harm to the car, and minimizes removing more clear or paint than necessary.

Now, without seeing any pictures I would recommend starting with a small test spot with SwirlX and see how it works. If it works to your satisfaction, then continue use. If it doesn't even touch the swirls, you then need to assess and consider if you think going to ScratchX 2.0 or Ultimate Compound makes sense for you.

I do want to stress using a test spot, though. Especially on black cars there is a chance with the very strong products like Ultimate Compound that it can leave some haze behind. It's best to know how things will turn out on a small area than doing the whole car first.

Here's some more information about how to remove swirls by hand

Well after LOTS of reading around the forum, I decided to go with some UC, and then finish off with NXT 2.0.

I have 2 pics, one is a before, and the second one is after I did clay bar on the entire truck, and then did a test spot like everybody says to do with the UC, and then NXT on top of it. I didn't work the UC tooooo hard just because this is my first time doing something like this and I am just trying to get used to it.

It's not perfrct yet, but it's a good start.

Sorry about the light, it's all I had laying around in the garage, and it was starting to get dark out.

It looks like you definitely knocked down the deeper stuff but I think a see a little light haze. It could just be the picture, though.

If it is haze, then I would suggest following the UC with some SwirlX and medium pressure. Do a test spot and see if it improves the finish.

        Great start though!

In person, does it look like all the bad marks are gone, and now it is a lot of light marks/haze?

The haze is very slight, if any. The pic makes it look bad. I was busy on the 4th so tomorrow (5th) I am going to finish it up.
