  • Question on using Megs 82/80

    Hi

I have a 2009 Acura TSX/ (Soft Honda paint) which is now 1 year old. The car is charcol grey and has always been hand washed.

I have swirls that I would like taken out by a D/A or Random Orbital.

    My question is the process:

Assuming the car is washed and clayed

Will I use the Meg 82 on a tan finishing pad? If that not sufficent move to Meg's 80/white polishing pad combo?

Will i need to go back to 82 on the tan pad afterwards?

Also what speeds would you use on the 82 and 80?
(I plan on getting the G-110 DA)

I plan to use the tan pad and NXT 2.0 as my last step.

    Thx

    Donald

Re: Question on using Megs 82/80

    Hi Donald,

I think the combo you're lookig for is M83/M80, and that was the old combo before Meguiars recently introduced the M105/M205 combo.

The Meguiars polishing pad is yellow, although there are white polishing pads by other makers that approximate Megs yellow pads in terms of cutting ability. Typically you would use the polishing pad with the M105 or M83 compound. The tan pad is likely a finishing pad and you would use that with the polishing step (M205 or M80)

But please post photos of the condition of your paint before you start. There are many seasoned pros on MOL who are always willing to lend some advice.

Re: Question on using Megs 82/80

      Hi

Thanks for the reply. The reasoning I'm think of using 82/80 vs 80/83 was because i am thinking of the least aggressive approach. As a new guy I a little gunshy on the word aggressivness. Do you think I will need the 83 for a new car?

Also can you tell me if there are advantages/disadvantages using the "newer" m105/m205 over the older 80/83?

      Thanks again

      Donald

Re: Question on using Megs 82/80

Probably not. For instance, I own a 2008 Accord sedan (royal blue pearl). It has some very light swirling and I plan to detail it in about another two weeks. I will probably use M205 with a finishing pad to start off, but I don't anticipate having to use more than M205 with a polishing pad. But I would be equally comfortable using M80 as well.

The condition of your paint is key here. Try to snap some shots of any swirling after you wash and clay using direct sunlight. Post the photos back here where far more accomplished pro detailers can guide you (I'm just a hobbyist/enthusiast at this stage )

Thanks ClearlyCoated. I know reading on the Meg's 08/82/83 all using dimishing abrasive so the surface goes clear when its all worked through. Can you tell me if the 205 goes clear too? Or will you just stop polishing when then defect is repaired. I will try to get pic when I get a chance to wash my car again

          Cheers

M205 uses SMAT (super micro-abrasive technology) so the product never breaks down like M80/82/83. But to answer your question, 205 also goes "clear" - really more of a smeary shiny veneer, but unlike DAT products M80/82/83, you can keep working the product. I would wipe it off at that point, after performing 4-6 cross-hatched passes over your 18"x18" work area.

            M205-M105 vs M82-M80-M83

What's the difference between Meguiar's Super Micro Abrasive technology and Meguiar's Diminishing Abrasive technology?

Thanks for tip on the 205. Have you ever used Menzerna PO106FF/FA then followed up with Menzerna PO85RD..wondering how this will be also?

              Thx

Not to familiar with Menzerna (Meguiars fan boy ). Your question might be better answered on truthindetailing.com - lots of Menzerna enthusiasts there.
