  • A few troubles with Ultimate Compound

About a week ago I was attempting to do a full detail to my black MKV GTI. I washed using the NXT car wash, then clay with the QD, then the UC, M07 and some Gold Class wax. The paint was in good shape to begin with but I wanted to get some swirls and things out.

However I wasn't getting any results with the UC. I was working by hand using a terry cloth applicator pad from Autozone. After my first few sections with each portion of the pad, the product started to bunch up as I worked it into the paint. I thought this was the QD I used for claying but it looks like a lot of you guys use the QD while you clay.

It also had a negligible effect on the paint. I had very little success in getting much of anything out. It did help quite a bit in some areas where I used a rubbing compound last year before I knew what that was going to do, but even that was after three or so applications. But most of the swirls and scratches were still there.

The glaze and wax did do a great job of hiding the swirls but it isn't perfect. Any ideas what could be wrong with the UC? Is it just the hard paint?

Try using a microfiber or foam applicator

Your paint could be hard. how long did you work the UC?

I've heard that VAG uses a pretty hard paint for their cars. I was shooting for about a minute per section. And I kept each section to ~1 sq. ft.

It really is best to do a test spot for a reason, so you dont do the entire car and find it isnt perfect.

You were also putting some pressure behind the pad? And the swirls werent "moving around", as in you were creating any?

When you say bunching up, do you mean like it gummed up onto the pad?

I would try a terry cloth applicator. When you say gummed up on the pad, maybe your using to much product. Try using less and really putting some "passion" in the test spot.
