What is the difference between a Porter Cable and a Dewalt Rotary Buffer? I need a new Rotary and I have heard that the Porter Cable is a good buffer but is it the same as the Dewalt, Milwalkee, Mikita, Hitatchi and so on.....? I noticed that the speed on the porter cable starts out at 2,500 RPM and goes to 6,000 RPM.

A D.A and a rotary are two different types of tools.

There is a big difference in these machines, the Porter Cable is a DA. So check out the links below for some help

Rotary vs. DA Polisher vs. Traditional Orbital Buffer

Can a rotary buffer be as idiot proof as a PC?

Like Tuck and JohnM have already mentioned, the rotary and DA (Dual Action Polisher) are two different machines. Although Porter Cable also produces a rotary (model # 7428) your comment about the RPM is more consistent with the Porter Cable 7424. The 2500-6000 RPM you mention are actually OPM's (oscillations per minute) and is much milder than a direct drive rotary which spins as much as 3000 RPM (revolutions per minute).

This is the important difference between a DA machine like the Porter cable 7424 and a rotary like the DeWalt or Makita. Direct drive rotaries generate a lot of heat and pressure and in the hands of a novice can cause major damage such as burn through to your paint. The DA uses two simultaneous movements with oscillations (2500-6000 OPMs) while spinning at a low 400-500 RPM's. Because of the slow RPM movement and because nearly all DA's have a safety clutch mechanism that stops the device's spinning if too much pressure is applied, it's almost impossible to damage the paint with a DA.

        Go with a DA.

When you say "Porter Cable" are you referring to the Porter Cable PC7424 random orbital buffer or the rotary 7428 made by Porter Cable (as seen below)? I ask because you say you're looking for a new rotary and everyone automatically assumed you meant an orbital...

Your dead on Porter Cable makes both and they are now owned by Dewalt/Black & Decker and I am pretty sure they P/U Milwaukee as well.

My vote if you can handle the $ diff look hard at the Flex Rotary !!!!!!!!!

The Flex rotary with the smaller casing is amazing....has the same body and layout as the Flex DA 3401 but is in fact a rotary. The smaller size makes it easier to wield and is priced very competitively.

Re: Machine Question Porter Calbe vs........

Thanks guys. I didn't know a Port Cable was a DA and I also didn't know they made a Rotary. I am currently using a cheap Rotary I got from Harbor Freight for 34.99 and it's was inconsistent in speed. I will have it set on 1 and then it speeds up to setting 3 without me even changing the setting so I was thinking of going the Dewalt way. I do like the flex buy they are kind of expensive... 299.99 and I can get the dewalt for 179.99. What do you guys thing?

Thanks again for all of your quick responses.

I must say you guys are the nicest people I have ever met on a Forum..

                  Jason.
