  • a couple of questions #7 and 26

hello long time user of meguairs first time posting i am going to do a silver lancer with paint in great condition here is my plan of attack

wash with dawn or something similar
    clay bar the car
wash again (straight water no soap)
    use the #7 polish
    then finish with the #26

now my question would it be of any benefit to the appearance if i use mutiple coats of either or both of the 7 or 26??

    anything you would change?
i will be using a 10 inch orbital buffer with cloth pads

    thanks!!

ps i have a 20 year old truck and have been asked a few times where i have had it painted.....i tell them its original paint and to use meguiars!!!

    I would do this:

Wash with car wash soap, such as Gold Class Shampoo or Deep Crystal Car Wash
    Clay the car
    no need to re wash
    M07
M26 - maybe do a second coat the next day

If you want to make sure the car has no existing wax or anything on it, then the Dawn might me necessary, otherwise, use actual car wash shampoo such as Gold Class thast has high lubricity to keep from scratching the car.

I would skip the orbital buffer, but that is just me. I prefer to work by hand, I feel like it gives me better control over the application and removal.

Also, do a test spot on the silver car with M07, it might not make that much of a difference on silver. From what I have gathered, M07 is best for dark colors. Two thin coats of M26 might end up looking equally as good, plus protect a bit longer. Don't get me wrong, M07 is a great product, but I'm not one for spending extra time and product on a potential marginal return. See Also: Point of Diminishing Return

I can atest to using #7 on dark colors.
I had a black Volvo 760 and used #7 on it. afterward the paint was very deep and wet looking.

Not easy to tell if there is any residual wax.
Isn't it better to use Dawn if we plan to do the 5-step ritual (wash-clay-clean-polish-wax)?

                Sound good to me Mis3.

                Wash
                Clay bar....Mild or Agressive?
                Clean....Which Cleaner?
Polish....I do like #7 for that
                Wax....What would you suggest?

Actaully, the purpose of the Clean step is to remove wax.

So, if Dawn can do the job, there is probably no need for a separate Clean step, ie: Dawn - Clay - Polish - Wax - Wax.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Not sure if Dawn is good or bad; I just read people are doing it. I never did it myself.

The whole idea of CLEAN is to start over again. Replacing WASH - CLEAN by Dawn will save at least an hour time.

For Clay, I use SMOOTH SURFACE™ CLAY KIT.
For Clean, I use DEEP CRYSTAL® SYSTEM PAINT CLEANER.
For Polish, I use DEEP CRYSTAL® SYSTEM POLISH
For Wax-1, I use SYNTHETIC SEALANT or YELLOW WAX
For Wax-2, I use SYNTHETIC SEALANT OR YELLOW WAX

No need to re-wash the car after Clay; just wipe the car dry.....

I am in Toronto and a lot of Meguiars products in the professional line are not available here. My friend, who lives in New Hampshire, bought me that SYNTHETIC SEALANT or YELLOW WAX.

My car is a 5-years old Mercedes CLK in silver and the car surface is in excellent condition because of regular upkeep by Meguaires products. So it's not difficult to maintain a good shine.

I would skip the dawn and use a real car wash soap because the clay bar will remove all of the existing wax. Dawn isn't particularly good to be using on your paint as it has heavy degreasers in it and is not designed for car washing.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                          I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                          Remove swirls my friends.
