Accidently waxed fresh paint

I was in the zone and wasnt thinking and accidentally waxed a panel with nxt 2.0 that was painted 1 month ago. Am I screwed?

I think your only supposed wait 30 days but I could be wrong. If I were you I would get the wax off just in case your a couple days off.

I think you'll be okay.Paint should be left for 2-3 months so that it can cure.

I've done this before myself on the rear bumper and there's been no comeback,and that was 3 years ago.

Is it hot weather where you are?
Is it dry or humid for most of the time?

30 days is kind of a minimum.... so I would just leave it now.

If you really are worried, you could use a mild cleaner to get the wax off.

You are probably okay, but you should strip off the Tech Wax to be safe. Do you have any of our paint cleaners? ScratchX 2.0? Ultimate Compound? Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner?

The primary reason you do not want to wax fresh paint is that the solvents in the paint need time to escape. This is often referred to as "curing" and "cure time". If this is not allowed to happen properly the process can cause defects in the paint commonly called "fish eyes". We recommend waiting at least 60-90 days before applying any sort of wax protection; however if you just applied the wax and get it off soon I would not be too worried about any lasting negative effects.

We at Meguiar's recommend 60-90 days, but that is a broad recommendation just to be absolutely safe. Many times paint will cure faster depending on the kind of paint and the environment it is in. I have certainly heard 30 days thrown around by many customers and body shop employees as an adequate time for a paint to cure. Again, 30 days is not Meguiar's official answer, but it should give you some perspective on the issue.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes i do have those paint cleaners, Brian. I just finished using them on the panels that the body shop buffed. Then that is when i waxed the freshly painted panel.

For the past month, it has pretty much been raining/cloudy every day. You boston folks know what i'm talking about


edit: Just watched the weather and it's supposed to rain everyday this week. So i wont have a chance to clean the paint of the wax.

Back in the day before I knew any better. I put NXT over the paint the same day it was painted!

I would spray a 50/50 IPA/water solution onto the waxed panels, just to be safe. That should remove the wax. Of course, it all depends on the warranty that the body shop gave you. My body shop emphatically warned me that my warranty would be broken if I waxed the freshly painted panels before 90 days. Some people insist that modern paint cures within 30 days, but who wants to risk the body shop warranty?

I know how easy it is to do precisely what you did. You are not the first ... nor the last. I am not of course admitting that I ever did it ... but it's nice to have a bottle of alcohol in easy reach.

Hi all ! After a light crash with my car I get a part of it replaced by a professionnal. As far as I know, after the paint job, he's putting the pieces "to the oven" as he says. That allows the paint to be dried out much faster. The question is, as above, with such a paint job, do I need to wait before claying - waxing the part?

The bodyshop using an oven or heatlamps is considered in these statements above and you still have to wait for the recommended time to elapse.It's not the same kind of heat that is used at the factory.

The only problem part,is the wax.If you cover the fresh paint with wax/sealant,you are stopping the solvents from escaping.So you still need to allow a 2-3 month period.

The only way to be %100 safe is to wait 60-90 days before waxing any repaint.

The wash is ok. Just need to avoid a wax/selant, things that leav a layer of something on the paint.

Wouldn't a clay bar remove the wax from the fresh painted panel?
