  • Clouding after Waxing.....

OK. I detailed my Dad's 350Z last Saturday for fathers day and I have a small problem... I first Clayed the entire car with the Meguiars Clay kit. I then used UC with my High Speed Rotary buffer and that all looked great. I then put a coat of NXT 2.0 Wax on the entire car and when I whiped it off I could still see what looked to be dark spots like clouds all over the car. I was wondering did I not let the wax dry long enough? If I didn't how long should I wait before I whipe it off? Also last Saturday here in St. Augustine Florida it was SUPER HOT!! I started at 9AM and it was probably around 90 at that time. I washed the car the night before that way the paint would get hot while I was washing it.

    Thanks,

    Jason.

Were you applying the UC of NXT on the direct sunlight?

Humidity can certainly make the wax take longer to dry.

You should do a little search for "The Swipe Test", that will explain a lot. Also, remember that you probably removed the wax faster than you applied it, so swipe test a few areas.

Applying a wax too thick can also cause it to take longer to dry, or cause smears.

Since I live in Florida where it's HUMID all the time should I apply the wax and wait like 15 minutes before removing it just to be safe?

Drying time for NXT can vary from 10 minutes to 45 minutes, depending on ambient conditions. Michael Stoops recently offered this counsel:

The polishing oils in NXT 2.0 need to fully set up before removal or you can in some cases see some streaking. Make sure you're applying a very thin coat to all the painted surfaces of the vehicle and then let it dry for another 30 minutes or so. In fact, if you apply the wax and then start cleaning the interior of the vehicle - vacuuming, cleaning windows, dressing leather, vinyl, etc - and then dress your tires and exterior trim, and then put everything away you should be well beyond that 30 minute time period and the NXT will be fully dried. It will still wipe off without effort but you shouldn't have any streaking.
As others have suggested, use the Swipe Test. Given the Florida heat and humidity, I would expect that you would need to wait longer rather than shorter. Even here in Roanoke, I have found that NXT takes 20-30 minutes to dry.

Also, keep in mind that Ultimate Compound was NOT intended for rotary use. Because careful when using it as it wasn't developed with the usual lubrication required for high speed use.

I was thinking myself that this might have something to do with his buffing technique as opposed to the wax being the culprit.

You might want to go to a polish after the compound. So it would be compound -> polish -> wax

I thought the same thing at first but when I did my emenent I had the same clouding on the parts of the truck that I didn't use the UC with the rotary buffer.

I believe you should use SwirlX.
