  • NXT 2.0 Is this a fair statement???

Assuming unlimited time and ambition, is it fair to say that merely applying NXT 2.0 all the time instead of augmenting it with all the permutations of sprays, etc. will produce the finest finish???

    Here is my situation:

3 month old True Red Mazda MX-5 Power Hardtop

Only driven on totally perfect days

    < 50 miles/mo.

Car has only been washed once before pick up at dealership

Dusted daily with an Original California Car Duster

Currently 12 coats of NXT 2.0 applied c. a week to ten days apart

With any paint surface but particularly darker colors (which most effectively highlight defects) you want to touch it and/or rub it as little as possible. Constantly touching the surface with dusters, microfibers, towels, etc will eventually produce some marring or swirling especially if you have soft paint (i.e. Toyota and Honda).

You have a garage-kept car that never sees wind, rain, or snow so the likelyhood of it needing weekly waxes is slim to none. The previous layer simply has not eroded off the surface. Eventually the law of diminishing returns applies and you're simply spreading and removing wax as it can only bond in a finite number of layers before it is simply wiped off the surface.

Same goes for washing. Your biggest issue with a garage kept car is dust from the garage. I'd continue to use the California Duster if you utilize the proper technique and have had success keeping your car swirl free that way. Perhaps wash it when you drive it to prevent anything from bonding to the surface.

One tip would be if you have not clayed the car yet I'd do that immediately after your next wash. New cars sit at dealers, railways, and production line depots before you get handed the keys. There are more than likely a few bonded contaminants that clay will remove.

In your situation, I'd recommend washing/claying/waxing it the next time you drive it and then monthly waxes after that (even though it very likely doesn't require it).

Thanks a million Bounty, for the informative response. Given the "less touching is better" philosophy, perhaps I might be better off going with the occasional UQD or UQW based on the somewhat lesser surface pressure required...

Pretty much as mentioned earlier.Your finish will last much longer than any outdoor car.So you have got a good condition for maintainance.

Since you picked up the car,you have only washed it?

It's only been wet when dealer prepped before I picked it up. The joys of having all the time in the world to tinker with my car now that I'm an old retired in Florida kinda guy!!

Thanks for the great answer, Bounty. For some reason the mods tied up my initial thank you to you.

Given the "less touching is better" approach, perhaps I should start using a bit of UQD and UQW instead of the NXT given the slightly lesser surface pressure required...

Sort of apples to oranges comparison there. When you wax your car it should be after washing and/or claying. So you are applying pressure, yes, but to a perfectly clean surface. When wiping down with a quick detailer you're physically coming into contact with the contaminants/dirt/etc and wiping it across the surface. You're counting on the quick detailer to encapsulate the dirt particles and lift them into the microfiber without marring the paint but this may not always happen or your microfiber may trap a larger piece of dirt and abrade the surface that way.

Kinda darned if I do, and darned if I don't. I do, however, always California dust each panel immediately before I've been applying the UQD. I shoulda bought a white '64 Rambler rust bucket!

The finish will be fine,no doubt, but I think you'd be surprised at what's on your paint work if you do a full detail.Every car needs claying!

You've got plenty of time for this,so that would be your best bet.Your finish will be so much better.

I'll search the "how to's" and try to build up the courage! No matter what I throw at this car, it simply cannot present a clearer, swirl free shine. It's darn near freakin' blinding in it's clarity. Hiroshima saw fit to add the tiniest amount of orange peel, but I know the clay won't touch that, and I'm merely gonna accept it. My shrink tells me this is good therapy and a lot cheaper than psychotropic drugs!!!

                      Ha-ha! you've got that right!

If you've never clayed before,it's real simple.I know you're anxtious not to play around with the paintwork, but claying,if done properly, doesn't do any harm whatsoever.I wrote this out for someone last night...i'll see if I can dig it out..

                        Thanks a million, Eddie!
I'll also do some research here when time permits. I'm sure somebody someplace has done a review, but given you know my apprehension, I'd rather follow your advice...

Thanks RGP,Do you have any questions before you do any claying?

I'll be happy to help you out here,if you havn't done this before.

I'll first have to get both the kit and the courage. I appreciate your offer, and will definitely let you know! Read: Do I really wanna mess with a perfect factory finish and risk sleeping on the curb? Maybe I'll give it a shot later on her Acura...
