  • Bird Droppings

    Hello
    I have a question about a recent paint job and bird droppings. I have just finished re-painting my 63 Sprint H/T . I used PPG Global base and Concept 2021 clearcoat . the job has been completed about 3 weeks now, and was outside a couple of days ago . I noticed that a bird had did his business on top of my fresh paint , so I washed it off , but it left an etched place in the clear. I wet sanded with 2500 unigrit until the etched place was gone, so I then buffed it out. I noticed yesterday that the " etched " place was back. I've not ran into this problem before , and was wondering if anyone else has , and what they did about it . I think that I might need to neutralize the acid in the offensive contaminate , LOL , but I am unsure of what to use. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance;

    Re: Bird Droppings

    Sorry if this is a useless post, but I did do a search on bird droppings, and didnt come back with any results. I used some " different " words and came up with several hits , including one on " Scratch-X "
    Thanks again;

        Hi Falcon,It's not a useless post.

        I havn't ran into this problem with fresh paint before.I can always remove by conventional means.

        It seems you've already been quite aggressive with it already,and is still there.

        Possibly someone else here has came across this problem?

          I use M105 by hand to get rid of these etchings
          Never had them come back on me.

            Yes as I mentioned before, I have not even had time to wax the car yet. I have plenty of clear on it, but when I wet sanded it with unigrit 2500, it dissapeared and I thought it was gone . I buffed the etched area only , but I noticed yesterday that it was back. I have always been told to wait 30 days or more to wax fresh paint ( air dry applied , not sprayed in a bake booth ) , and that is why it doesn't have wax yet . Now I am afraid to seal it without getting rid of the etching problem first . Maybe someone can tell me how to neutralize the problem before going any further .
            Thanks;

              Re: Bird Droppings

              The full waiting time is normally 2-3 months(depending on weather conditions).This gives the paint time to cure.But,I've cheated in the past,so to speak,and waxed earlier(hot,dry summer weather).It didn't make any difference in my case,but then,I wouldn't suggest that anyone should do that,either.

              What product did you use with the buffer?

                Falcon,

                If you washed the area and then followed up with wetsanding and compound/polish then you should not have any need to neutralize anything else. Whatever was eating into the paint is almost certainly gone, and you might just have temporarily covered the small amount of etching remaining with oils, paint swelling, or something else used in the process.

                Before you break out the sandpaper again, I would try a hand application of Ultimate Compound or M105. See how that effects it with a pass or a few.

                If there is still something remaining, you may need to decide to live with it or risk burning through too much clear. Sometimes bird dropping are extremely invasive and can work their way deep into the paint in a very short amount of time- especially on fresh paint without protection.

                Any chance you can share some pictures? (Try Macro mode if your camera has it)

                  Thanks for the replies everybody. Mark' I will send pics tommorow morning, if you would look at them, I would appreciate it . My camera does have super macro and I can get them to you. I have a 66 Malibu 300 in my booth this evening , and I think that might be the best place to try to get a pic. I will get it out in the morning , and then get the pics. I might even be able to get a couple of decent pics in my garage. Either way, I found a thread , http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1516 , and on the black Viper , my problem is very similar to the condition on the Viper . Again, I am very sure that I have enough clear on the car to sand again, I just hope to maybe find a solution , or product that will keep it from coming back again . Being a painter, I know what happens when you are sanding clear , and color comes out on your pad or cloth .

                  Thanks Mark, and everyone else who replied. I will get pics in the AM . My camera has super macro , and if I can find a good place to see the spot in question , I will get the pics . My car is red , so I will need the right place to se the spot properly . Oh yeah, my avatar is my car . Thanks again
